Why do black people not like Mexican food? Or Asians, for that matter. Patrons of Chinese restaurants cover all backgrounds, but go into a Tex-Mex joints and it's all ofays and beaners.

Also, if any progress has been made into research on the "menthol cigarettes" question, I would like to hear about it.

An ofay is a peckerwood or cracker. I'm trying to bring the former into widespread usage on the theory that the main barrier to using ethnic slurs for humorous purposes is that there aren't enough good ones to use on white people.

It's not fair to break white people up into itty-bitty subsets while treating other ethnic groups as monoliths. Chris Rock makes the point better than I could.

Yeah, I could go through mick, paddy, dago, wop, polack, limey, kraut, gerry, ivan, kike, hebe, spic, frog, and so on every time I want to talk about white people. But it's time-consuming and, again, unfair. Much better to boil it all down into a couple of broader words.

Well, I guess we break up Asians into japs, nips, chinks, slopes, gooks, dotheads, towelheads, camel-jockeys, and a few others, but that just wastes even more times and it still just leaves all black people and brown hispanics lumped together, and that's not cool. So I suggest that we make the effort to differentiate our derogatory terms for these groups while coming up with umbrella ones for the others in the interest of both brevity and diversity.

I'm black and I like Mexican food. Whenever I go out with coworkers, the other black people on our team never shoot down Mexican. When it comes to family, it's virtually impossible to eat out anywhere that's not traditional American, but that's mostly "we don't like new things 'round these parts" attitudes that country folk have.

Hmm maybe. I'm probably the last person who should speaking on behalf of the entire race. I grew up out in the country, so Mexican restaurants weren't plentiful and we generally ate fast food if we ate out. If we went to a typical sit-down restaurant, it was Golden Corral or a fried seafood place. The younger generation is more open-minded because of the internet, better opportunities, and the like.

Both of these stem from a similar vein in Caucasian leisure activities. After achieving a certain level of prosperity, the trappings of that prosperity get to be boring. When you're born and raised with a wealth of material goods, they're not as big of a deal. This ennui makes people look for new sources of entertainment. Meanwhile, affluence also breeds conservatism, and with it an improbably fond imagining of the past. So whitey looks back at his ancestors and thinks that the shit they did was a lot of fun.

As outdoor activities become popular, it naturally becomes popular to at least appear as though you enjoy them. Hence Northface being worn by people who have no interest in camping.

Hunting breeds the desire for trophies. Shooting an elk or whatever the fuck no longer carries the massive satisfaction of feeding your family. They've got food. So, in order to get some feeling of importance out of the thing, you stuff your kill and display it. This also taps into long human tradition of claiming trophies, be they scalps, ears, shrunken heads, what have you. It's a way of revisiting the past for leisure and of continuing the age-old pissing contest: "Look at what I killed today."

The same basic premise applies to extreme sports. As a species we've gone to great lengths to avoid danger, and for those who have achieved that goal, safety is now boring. So white people snowboard and join the X-games and all that other shit. As other ethnicities reach similar levels of affluence I think you'll see them join in such needless perils, and may add new ones of their own.

Theories regarding your question:

1) Manual labor often benefits from long sleeves/pants, which provide a barrier to light injury.
2) The same reasons that people in the mideast are more fully covered than Americans in the same weather: clothes block out the sun and, worn properly, can help keep you cool
3) Many cultures favor lighter skin and disdain darker tones as a sign of menial labor or inferiority.

In the two country towns I've lived in most (in the NW Mountains of NC), the mexican joints are the most popular and successful restaurants in town.

I can't really speak about black people because mexicans (and recently Cubans) are the only minority we had in significant quantities, but the white country folk love the mexican too.

That's exactly why I'm curious. You can walk into almost any Mexican restaurant in NC and find a slew of white people from all walks of life. You also see Hispanic folks there, even though the stuff on the menu is typically as alien to traditional Mexican cuisine as pizza and hamburgers. (Perhaps they are conspiring with the staff to get more authentic fare)

Mexican food is tasty, cheap, and readily available. It's also been common for a couple of decades now, at least.. And yet I notice African Americans in these places so rarely that it sticks out in my mind on the occasions that it happens.
