Where could I get a painting looked at or authenticated? 4/6/2012 9:38:42 AM |

My grandmother had several paintings that pre-dated the 20th century as a part of her estate. In order to settle the estate, the paintings had to be appraised. An appraiser is probably a good place to start. 4/6/2012 10:01:50 AM |

i suppose that's true, but i guess my real question is: what makes you think this particular piece of art warrants closer investigation? can you make out the signature? do you know anything about the artist?4/7/2012 12:47:25 AM |

The reason I suggested an appraiser is that if they are not able to give you information about the painting on their own, they have the connections to set you off in the right direction. In order to appropriately appraise a piece of art work, you have to authenticate the piece of work. Even if the artist is not an important artist, sometimes the time period the art was produced is significant or the provenance of the piece is of some interest. 4/7/2012 9:18:03 AM |

I have looked at it and can authenticate that it is, in fact, a painting. 4/7/2012 12:28:38 PM |

Just a painting by him, nothing special. Said that it was very unlikely to be a re pro because hes not famous or anything. Worth about 800-1000 if I sell and 1.5k in a gallery.
Not bad for a $15 initial investment. 4/9/2012 10:08:23 AM |

I worked for someone who had a pair of silkscreen prints hanging in their living room that the wife hated because her husband had brought them home from Goodwill and insisted that they hang them. I liked them and did a little research and found out that these prints were worth $1200 a piece. 4/9/2012 11:03:12 AM |
