I don't understand this move, but I don't understand the valuation on Facebook, either. Maybe this is a calculated move, but I think it's just as likely that Facebook/social networks have very limited revenue streams, and FB saw this as a way to make FB seem like a better buy when they go public.

presumably, you go to facebook, upload your photos, apply instagram in facebook, or in the instagram app you upload straight through a direct link to facebook.

More pics, more page view opportunities. More time spend instagramming your facebook pics, more pageviews.

More page views/clicks, more ad revenue.

Google does not get this logic. They saw Facebook and went, "Oh, social networking is popular! Let's create a social network that doesn't have the popular features of Facebook. We can close that mother fucker in 2 years, just like we did with Buzz and Wave, after millions of dolts waste 15 minutes setting up their profile and adding people they know, people they don't know, people they want to make fuck with, and people they think will get them that high-paying job that their lack of a college degree has previously prevented them from getting.

Ernie - my point is that other than GIS, what has Google produced that has become the industry standard?

Their best products? Google.com and YouTube. They bought YouTube. You could argue Gmail here, but it's hard to fuck up a free email service.

Their shitty products? GoogleTV, Wave, Buzz, +, etc. Even Google Apps for Business is inferior to Office365.

Google should have bought Twitter and Yahoo.
