I saw other threads about moving logistics, but the one thread about costs was dead.
There's a living room set at my mom's place outside of Charlotte, and I want it at my place in North Raleigh. What's the most cost efficient way to get it out here?
Ride train and then drive a rental truck one way?
I looked into Pods and here's what they quoted me:

Fuck. That.

Yeah right, they'll F you on the mileage, plus those things get horrible MPG. Whats Raleigh to Charlotte, like 180 miles? You're best bet is probably the train/truck combo. Just make sure you can drop the truck off at a different location then where you picked it up. 4/10/2012 10:38:25 AM |

The rates are different for one way rentals vs. local compare the two.
Do you have a vehicle with a trailer hitch? Renting a box trailer might be cheaper. 4/10/2012 10:45:36 AM |

Nope, we have a Civic and a Corolla; neither of which has a hitch.

Wat. The cost of a train ticket to Charlotte is cheaper than the gas it would take to get there in a truck.4/10/2012 11:16:59 AM |

Ya, I rented a truck to move stuff from Wake Forest to N. Raleigh, and it was still ~$100 for rental, mileage, gas, etc.. The second smallest truck still has a 40 gallon tank, and the mileage is not exactly ideal. 4/10/2012 11:22:34 AM |

can you pull a trailer? you should be able to rent a u-haul for $85. drive down there, pick up trailer, load trailer, drive to Raleigh, unload trailer and drop off trailer in Raleigh. I just did this moving a bedroom set from Wilmington to Raleigh. 4/10/2012 11:58:44 AM |

You need to do a cost analysis on the living room set to determine if it is worth the cost of transporting it and the hassle/time of moving it. You may be better off buying something new in the Raleigh area that includes delivery. 4/10/2012 12:07:14 PM |

I would borrow a truck or SUV if possible and go the box trailer rental route. That way you are not paying per mile or the extra for a one way truck. 4/10/2012 12:27:04 PM |

You could rent a truck/suv from Enterprise and then rent a trailer. Unlimited mileage on the vehicle with better gas mileage than a UHaul truck and the rental trailer should be <$100. 4/10/2012 2:49:59 PM |

Borrow a friend with truck/trailer, pay for gas and their meal, and a case of beer, and go get that junk. Maybe throw in a stop to somewhere fun like watching Nascar in Kannapolis or a concert in G-boro, or an overnight at your mom's.
That's what I would do (but I have a pickup truck so I am the friend who gets asked to go to places like that). My cost is usually some beers, they pay gas and my food. 4/10/2012 2:58:59 PM |

Start shopping early and buy a 3/4 or 1-ton truck and a big trailer for a good deal.
Move all your stuff.
Sell the truck and trailer for what you paid or more.
I have done this a couple of times. 4/10/2012 3:15:46 PM |

I'm fairly positive that uhaul only allows certain vehicles to pull their trailers. Last time I checked you couldn't even use a Ford Explorer, for example. 4/12/2012 10:21:16 AM |

Thanks again, we ended up renting a truck from Enterprise, and we're driving up on Friday night/coming back Saturday morning. I had no idea car rental places ignored vehicle mileage. I was dreading paying by the mile for a Uhaul. 4/12/2012 10:28:45 AM |

They do match trailer size to vehicle. it depends what size trailer you are renting. I just rented the largest trailer they carry, the 6' x 12' dual axle trailer, and pulled it with my Grand Cherokee. 4/12/2012 10:31:07 AM |
