There are a bunch of things that I'll buy, grocery-wise, that are store brand or whatever, to save money. But there are some things where only the name-brand stuff will do, and I don't mind paying a little bit extra for.

My list:

-Paper towels and toilet paper (2-ply only)
-Cereal (most store brand stuff is gross to me)
-OJ (not necessarily brand name, but has to be Not from Concentrate)
-Simply Lemonade (all other lemonades bow in its greatness)
-Dish detergent (dat 190% Dawn)

That's all I can think of right now, but I'm sure there are more.

What's on your list of stuff you have to buy high-quality or name-brand?

The cheap stuff always seems to fall apart and not dry very well and I end up needing to use 2. Plus I like them to be durable for wiping up spills (the joys of having a 2 year old son).

I hate cheap paper towels. They don't absorb well and feel rough on your skin if you try to blow your nose or wipe your face with them. Plus most of them are not perforated for removing in halves and they always tear unpredictably if you try to break off a piece.

Cheap garbage bags will never be worth the hassle. They leak fluids into the trashcan and they rip apart when you try to remove them.

toilet paper is the big one. i'm down with most generic brands, but generic cereals tend to be sub par. pop tarts are another where the name brand clearly reigns supreme.

miracle whip, mt olive pickles, and carolina packer hot dogs.

i don't skydive, but a parachute is something i would not skimp on.

-Paper Towels
-TP
-Butter
-Frozen Pizza, potato products, meals
-Beer (I don't drink cheap shit at home)
-Hygiene products
-Certain condiments like Mayo
-Processed meats like hotdogs (huge difference), bacon, sausage, deli meat, etc.

most other grocery store generics are alright. I like to cook and garden so I try to eat as fresh as possible so most of the frozen/processed stuff hardly ever factors in for me.

I'd say the biggest thing I don't "skimp on" are clothes. I go with brands I know and trust and I am very much a brand whore. almost everything I wear head-to-toe is Ralph Lauren. It fits me, it lasts, it stays fashionable through time.

I also would not skimp on furniture if buying a new set. I'd rather pay a lot for something I love that will last than some cheap shit I'll be replacing every couple of years.

OP didn't limit it to grocery store, in his question, so neither did I!! Doesn't your HT have a scuba gear section??

I don't skimp on big purchases like furniture, appliances, TVs. I still make sure to get a good deal and am even ok with getting used if the quality is high, but I also want something that will stand the test of time as I don't intend on making those kinds of purchases often.

As far as food goes, we almost never skimp if the skimping compromises health. That being said, we have pretty awesomely low expenses on food considering the emphasis we place on eating healthily.

and if we're talking about non-grocery items then i'll have to say my climbing shoes. la sportiva >>>>> evolv
