I'm not putting this in the garage because I want the average person's input and not just car nerds.

I'm looking for a new car but have conflicting interests that drive me in divergent directions when it comes to picking a car.

Wants:
small
not too bad on gas
convertable
somewhat stylish
not too expensive

a bmw 1 series was where i was looking but then i realized they get 11mpg so now the frontrunner seems to be a vw eos but i just don't really want a high-maintenance german car. I know my wants are hypocritical but just hearing all of the options might help.

i don't know what is "not too expensive", but it's not like you said "sedan" and there are so many not too expensive sedans to go through that it is exploding your mind.

there are only 11 convertibles under $35K sold in the US, so how hard could it be to go through them one by one yourself and choose what you want? (and not all 11 are small, so your pool is extremely small)

http://www.edmunds.com/finder/car-finder-results.html?finder_q=type:Convertible;

basically your choices are (large ones excluded)

under 35K:
miata
beetle
eos
mini cooper
mini cooper roadster
mini cooper roadster jcw
fiat 500

between 35K and 50K:
1-series
3-series
z4
370z
c70
is250
is350
tt
tts
slk
a5
g37

obvious choice is obvious

miata OR mc roadster jcw

if you have the cash, go for 370z or z4 or g37 or is350

really, was that so hard to do?

TreeTwista10, i am extremely interested in knowing what cars you consider to be stylish. among convertibles (that fit his criteria), and among all cars.

For the OP, how about this: http://www.edmunds.com/maybach/landaulet/2011/

People who think Miatas are girl cars haven't driven one. So don't let that stop you. If the styling just isn't your thing, well that's something different.

An Eos, on the other hand, is definitely a girl car. Plus I don't trust VWs not to turn into a money pit around the 5 year mark.

I'd be inclined to advise you towards the Cooper roadster JCW. I don't think they are bad looking but, again, taste is subjective.

Still not many options, as there are relatively just a few convertibles on the market in the US. I listed all the 50K and under ones, and there's 19 of them. So if you are buying used, that's pretty much your pool + a few other options such as the S2000 or an old Celica or MR2. (Unless your definition of "not too expensive" is different from what most people's would be)

So, your best options are:

1-series (if it is still on the list, also 3-series and Z4)
Miata
370Z (used?)
S2000
Mini Cooper Roadster Convertible John Cooper Works

my friend's mini cooper is broken every 1k miles...and another 1500-2500 dropped at the mini dealership.

He has the S edition...

right now his turbo makes a nice noise when he turns it off.

Mini's are great when they have a warranty...once it's off..prepare for anal penetration

Not surprisingly, just another piece of evidence to show that you should never pay attention to anything OEP says on this board.

Terrible fucking advice? check.

I am now intrigued by 80s early 90s small model mercedes in diesel. I have found a ton with sunroofs and I have found a ton that are convertible but did they make convertible diesels? cars.com has listed all of the convertibles as unknown fuel.

Another possibility is a circa 2000 slk kompresser.

All of these cars are ~5k. Is this going to be a bitch on maintenance? Will these cars constantly break down with 100k-300k miles or will they do pretty well once you get them fixed?
