Quote :
"You Can't Hear it on the Radio is a blog about the current golden age of music. At no time since the 1960s has there been such an output of quality music by so many varied artists. Add to that technology that makes it easier than ever for the curious to find good music today. But, like an unlimited selection at an all-you-can-eat buffet, there's no table service. You will have to seek it out. The old model is dead. Generally speaking, you can't hear it on the radio. You can learn about it here, though.

The other day, my 18-month old daughter climbed up into my wife's lap. My wife was reading Rolling Stone at the time, and as my daughter looked at the magazine she started pointing out people she "knew" in the pictures. A photo of Bill Maher was identified as "Grandpa" (close enough), Adele was "Mommy" (not remotely similar but not insulting) and Dave Grohl was "Daddy". Needless to say, my daughter is now out of the will.

It’s incredibly frustrating to abhor Dave Grohl - after all, he's one of the most ridiculous rock drummers of the last 20 years.

Kurt Cobain may (rightfully) be the main focus of attention for Nirvana, but Grohl and bassist Krist Novoselic were the engine behind Nirvana's sound, making Cobain's guitar and vocals work even better. Unfortunately, due to circumstances out of Grohl's control, Nirvana ended in 1994. And that's when it all went awry. Grohl went from Nirvana...to I'll Stick Around.

Which is okay, I guess. After all, Grohl deserves credit for playing every instrument (with the exception of one guitar part), writing every lyric, and singing every vocal on the first Foo Fighters album (1995's Foo Fighters) - which is why the drums are awesome on I'll Stick Around. It's not even a bad song - the Nirvana influences are obvious. But now, 16 years later, we get Rope.

What? This is the drummer from Nirvana? I suppose we’ll never know what John Bonham or Keith Moon would have gotten into post-Zeppelin or post-Who, but I sincerely doubt it would have been something with this level of dull mediocrity. Even the most “edgy” Foo Fighters moments are done with the sheen and gloss of safety and mainstream acceptance. Take, for example, the video for The Pretender.

Ostensibly, the Foo Fighters are “thrashing” and “rocking”, but if you listen closely, there’s the same old Foo, just sped up and given a rougher guitar sound. It’s rock and roll by numbers. So they “snarl” into the camera and have an “us against The Man” video? METAL!

In the end, the choices Grohl and the Foo Fighters make just seem incredibly cynical. Bands are forever being accused of selling out. Generally, I don’t buy into that argument. It’s hard to blame a group like Los Campesinos! - who still have to work second jobs to make ends meet – for selling a song to Budweiser for an advertisement, but what happens if you start from selling out?

Along those lines, critic Jim Derogatis recently compared the Foo Fighters to Nickelback. NICKELBACK!

If that’s not damning enough, the fact that Derogatis is actually right about something should be the biggest indictment of the Foo Fighters ever. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes, but when Derogatis (who hates Bruce Springsteen because, among other reasons, he doesn’t agree with Springsteen’s lyrical version of New Jersey) both thinks you’re terrible and is right, it’s time to re-examine your musical choices.

To go right down into the slippery slope portion of this post, I have to note that when you Google “Foo Fighters suck”, there are 2,530,000 results. Also, when I asked my friend Matt what he thought of the Foo Fighters, this is what he said: “I just can’t stand any of their songs.” There it is, my friends - conclusive proof that the Foo Fighters suck.

So now, as we grow closer to Nirvana's rightful and inevitable Rock and Roll Hall of Fame enshrinment (2014), we're confronted with the cold light of reality - we are nine dull years from the Foo Fighters going into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Is that an indictment of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Sure, but that’s well-trod ground and another post altogether. After all, do you really need to be reminded that Stevie Ray Vaughn, Cheap Trick, KISS and – most egregiously – The Replacements aren’t in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? But soon the Foo Fighters may be?

The Foo Fighters must be stopped.

I dig the Foo and really like the new album. I just don't try and pass them off as a metal band.
