Insert any menial customer service job... waitress, cashier, bag boy...

It more or less means "Here! Now piss off/LEAVE!" - whether intended, or not.

I see it differently. It all depends in the delivery.

If they do it with a smile on their face and with pep in their talk I would not see that has bad customer service at all.

"Here you go, is there anything else I can help you with?"

Now say that to someone with a smile on your face and pep in your voice and people will find you very polite and helpful.

I mean honestly, you can take any phrase and change it from the most polite thing you've ever heard someone say to make it seem like the most rude thing you've ever heard someone say.

It's all in delivery.

Delivery is what takes "God bless you" and makes it sound like "Cover your fucking mouth"

I can smile and deliver a peppy "Fuck you!", but it doesn't change the meaning of the words spoken.

Instead of "here you go", the server could use "Here is your ...." or "May I bring you anything else?". The cashier could say "Thank you, have a nice day!" or "Thank you shopping at blah blah blah today!" or "see you next time!" etc etc etc.

Exactly....so when someone hands you something what are they supposed to say?

"I brought you this"
"I got this for you"
"Here is your food"

Anyone of those phrases could be taken has here is your shit now fuck off.

So when I take away your line, you would really substitute "I BROUGHT YOU THIS" ???

Well what would you say?

And I could consider saying I brought this for you as something that could be very polite.

It could mean "I saw this and I thought you might enjoy/like/need it so I brought it to you"

^^ But, no one says this in gift giving. That's even more weird.

If I go over to someone's house with something that I want to give them...not necessarily as a birthday/christmas present situation...more of a randomly got something for this person situation...

"Hey I brought this over for you, thought you might like it"

But I would really like to know what you think should be said instead of "Here you go"

Well I really think that you just have no idea what delivery means...

Someone who is giving you a real smile with real pep in their voice is not going to sound rude or at all giving you a sarcastic reply when saying "here you go"

There are some people out there that are actually nice and happy people that can make just about anyone feel happy about even hearing bad news...now that is a good customer service rep....making someone feel happy about having to pay fees that they previously didn't know about

Like two or three times a month, I go to a crossroad's grill to pick up breakfast for my husband. I have frequently been handed a bag with my food in it with the words "Here you go!" with a big old friendly smile. I always respond with a smile and "Thanks!" and they tell me to have a nice morning. I don't think that it's impolite at all and I think it's very appropriate.

No, it's a good thing I'm not in retail or the food industry. The customer service in my industry (ies (both jarbs)) is relationship oriented.

If a waiter/waitress slammed my food down at my table while saying 'HERE YOU GO!" then I might be a little offended/taken back

but "here you go" said politely and courteosly is not bad customer service. It's all about delivery.

it's more lazy than anything

instead of saying "here are your groceries" they get lazy and just say "here you go"
