At first glance, I didn't think there was anything wrong with this. Considering people are paid up to 5,000 for in-patient experimental drugs. Then I read how Dr. Klein justified this clinical study, and I just don't get it. How did this pass the IRB (institutional review board). Here is the story:
http://www.stltoday.com/lifestyles/health-med-fit/fitness/article_d5c6665f-f7a6-5b91-900f-716650ec979f.html
It has been proven that with diet and exercise, you can drastically change your metabolic panel. But rather than take a preventative approach, this sounds like a more therapeutic intervention,
Quote : | "If we could find out why some people are resistant to the adverse metabolic effects of obesity, we might be able to develop better therapies and medications to break the link between obesity and metabolic diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease." |
So, better drugs for the obese? Yay! And to be eligible for the study, you have to already have a BMI of 30% or more.
What is the incentive at the end of the study? Well besides the 3,500 compensation, you will be enrolled in a 6-month weight loss program! Ha. How many of these people will stick to this program and actually lose more weight than the already were before and after the study? 5/11/2012 11:56:43 AM

You can eat decent meals at McDonalds. Get a couple of double meat burgers, ask for no cheese and no salt, throw out half of the buns. Of course, at that point it's gross, but hey, desperate times call for desperate measures.

Yea...I didn't read the story... I mean you'd figure they'd want a fit looking person to go in there who does eat fast food many times a week to see what they're doing to keep themselves healthy looking 5/11/2012 1:36:35 PM

Don't really wanna read the full article but I wonder if you get to pick the fast food establishment? And if so you get to pick the menu item. Most fast food places offer salads on their menu that can't be TOO unhealthy. 5/11/2012 4:09:38 PM

Most salads at fast food places are worse for you than the sandwiches, often markedly so. They take out the bun and the mayonnaise, but in its place put copious gobs of cheese, egg, bacon, tortilla strips, and at least half a gallon of ranch dressing. Think of the prep work that goes into those salads…significantly more handiwork is required, meaning a significantly greater chance that unwashed testicle scratching fingers are going to be putting your shit together. Avoid salads at fast food establishments. You’re not saving any calories and you’re more likely to get salmonella. 5/11/2012 4:16:54 PM

There are still somewhat healthy options though and you can order things to be a little healthier. Like a grilled chicken sandwich at chick-fil-a without butter all over the bun. Or the chili at Wendy's. 5/11/2012 4:21:11 PM

No you don't get to choose your restaurant.
Quote : | "The volunteers have five restaurant choices — McDonald's, Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut — where they will add 1,000 excess calories a day to their normal diet." |
You might be able to do it with the grilled stuff from 4 of the 5. But I don't think that's what they even want you to do. Go as greasy as you can! You're supposed to gain 5% more.

I'd like to do this if I could get a month off to fast afterwards to get back to my playing weight. I'm such a fat kid at heart. At lunch today I got Wendys drive thru, ate it in the parking lot, then went back around for a second lap. 5/11/2012 4:30:55 PM
