WTF! Twice in a week I go to fill up and there is a stoopid redneck chick smoking a cigarette while pumping gas. 2 different dumbasses at 2 different gas stations.

Wanna smoke? Fine, do it where you don't run the risk of blowing people up.

you can put out a lit cigarette in a puddle of gas. It's flicking the match or the lighter that is dangerous about smoking at the pump.

A lit cig can as does ignite gas fumes.
Why do you think there are "no smoking within 50Ft" signs at gas stations?

there's been a lot of back and forth on that in the pseudoscientific community. theoretically it could happen, maybe it has a couple times. most of the time it won't though.

and not smoke.
The lighter and lit cigarette are ignition sources.

Psuedo-Science? No, its actual science. Just because it wont happen most of the time doesn't mean it will never happen and doesn't mean it is acceptable to do so. The fires, explosions, injury and death that can result from smoking around gas stations are preventable by people NOT SMOKING AROUND THE GAS PUMPS.

There are also signs that say "don't leave your car on while pumping" and "don't use cell phones".
As much as these signs are ignored, gas stations around the world should be blowing up daily, if these dangers really existed.

The only fires I've seen start a gas station fire are
1) Static Electricity
2) Car fires
3) Car wrecks into a pump

If I see someone smoking at a gas pump, I'll make it hazardous to their health.

This reminds me of the Mythbusters ep where they tried to get a cell phone to start a gas fire. By the end they had a phone with the battery terminals exposed in a sealed chamber full of gas fumes and they still couldn't get it to blow up.

I smoke, but smoking while pumping gas is stupid. I don't care if it only happens 1 in 10,000 times. Wait until you're done and back in the car.

Yep, both times. Got stoopid redneck attitude and rationalization that went no where.
Call the cops? they would have been gone before the cops arrived.
The clerk is a dumb ass too, could have shut the pumps off but she was sitting in her bombproof shelter
Both times I had just finished pumping and after I said what I had to say and they acted like a dumbass I left.

so, my friend.... used to do this every time she pumped gas. I told her she could blow shit up that way, she did not really think it was possible, and I had a discussion with her about chemistry and physics, to no avail. Shit one time this speaker box cut on and told her to put her cigarette out, she finally did, but she was bent out of shape over it

Just to be clear, that is still too many. I don't care if it is 1:1,000,000 or 1:10,000,000.
It is a completely preventable event.
Your fucking weak minded nicotine habit does not supersede my right to safety.
Hell, I like to smoke every now and then but there is a time and place for everything.
And smokers wonder why non-smokers don't like them.

as improbable an event as it might be, there still really is no need for smoking at a gas station. an open flame of any sort around flammable liquids and vapours is just plain stupid.

Back when I smoked, I never smoked while pumping gas. Why would you? It's not a big deal to put your cigarette out before you get to the station or just not light up when you're on your way to fill up. Even though the chance of fucking shit up with a smoldering cigarette is miniscule, I bet it really sucks to be the lonely statistic. Not to mention, there's a retard out there who is going to see some of you smarties smoking your cigarette at the pump who gets the bright idea to *light* a cigarette at the pump.

Even though I've tried and failed (probably multiple times) to light gasoline / fumes with a lit cigarette, I still wouldn't smoke while pumping gas.

"A cigarette has the potential to light a pool of gasoline but just doesn’t have enough sustained heat. Gas ignites between 500 °F and 540 °F, the cigarette at its hottest was between 450 °F and 500 °F but only when it was actually being smoked. An ignition is very improbable."

But it doesn't matter to me how improbable it might be, those are the rules. Like when people won't turn off their goddamned iDouche when the plane is on the tarmac.

actually, the plane scenario is entirely different. there's no probative evidence that a cell-phone or ipod is going to interfere with the plane's navigation system. it just isn't going to happen. i mean, it might, but pretty much no one has been able to explain how or show the mechanism beyond "hurr durr, magic electronics!!!" meanwhile, with gasoline and cigarettes, at least there is a probable explanation, one that damned near everyone understands: fire plus fuel go BOOM.

^^The point I'm making is that it doesn't matter how real the danger is in actuallity, the rules are there and you can't decide which ones to follow and which ones to ignore.

A cigarette can get to 500 degrees and gas ignites at 500 degrees. Seems like a good reason not to smoke around gas.

^^^ I'm well aware of that, but even with that understanding, it's still much easier to understand how a heat source plus fuel that is ignited by a heat source could be a bad idea.

exactly. or, the moron that throws his lit cigarette into the trash can, or other stupid behaviours. Just seems smarter to disallow all open flames around gas fumes that are engineered to combust in the presence of oxygen and flame

i agree with the "no smoking within X feet of gas pumps" signage, its definitely good and proactive to prevent potential damage and danger

but also some people don't understand the science and overreact
