It used to be easy to get an appointment at the Westgate post office. Which reminds me I need to do that sometime soon

You don't even need an appointment. Just go at a random time, like 2:42

When I got mine -- years ago -- I want to say I just showed up with the passport photos, paper work, and credentials. I don't know that an appointment was necessary. Try one of the less busy post offices? I went to the one in Wake Forest by the public library.

It's always a shit show in the passport area at the post office I go to. I feel sorry for the workers and the people waiting. Looks like a humongous pain in the ass.

We have a potential winner. Garner post office opens up the phone at 8am every Friday for appts for the following week. Dude said its like trying to get concert tickets. He said keep calling until you get an answer.

Damn, I didn't realize it was that tough to get one for some locations. My gf had no trouble going to the post office here in Columbia, SC to get one, but I can imagine there are a ton more people trying to get passports in the Triangle than here.

Time of year makes a difference I've heard. Summer is much busier than fall, etc.

^ lol I didn't even realize you need one for Puerto Rico. I figured Americans could just show a driver's license or something

If you need one in a pinch, you can go to the Washington Passport Office and have it ready the same day.

I had no idea about this appointment business, either. I got my passport in 2006 at the cameron village post office. just dropped in and applied.

if you think getting a passport is a pain in the ass, try getting a visa. apparently, since the USA has become so anal about issuing visas since 9/11, many countries have 'retaliated' by making it more troublesome for americans to get their visas. i had to drive all the way to atlanta and meet all sorts of requirements just to get a visa to live in france as a student.

oh, and if your paperwork is out of order, or you're missing something? tough shit, drive 7 hrs back to NC and come back with the right stuff.

Do this (if you really need it). Costs a lot, but I got my passport in less than 48 hours.

awesome.

btw, the last three times i've come back into the country, i've gotten a "admitted to the united states" stamp, with an "entry valid until" date stamped... is this now standard, or what gives? some people in my group did, some did not. seems weird to do that on a us passport. i didnt think that was normal, but perhaps things have changed recently.

multiple points of entry, different origins.

I want to say that when initially applied for my passport I did so at the Clerk of Court's office (Currituck County).

I had trouble with that when I got my passport a couple years ago, ended up going to a post office in Holly Springs or somewhere in that general area and had it done the day I called. Everywhere in or near the Raleigh/Cary area was pretty much a no go.

I thought you could just mail the stuff in and you just had to wait for the central authorities (feds) to print yours out and mail it back to you.

My passport picture is old, so I flip open to my student visa page (which has a recent picture) when I'm at the airport, and they always ignore it, flip back to my normal picture, then shoot me a crazy look when they see 17 year old me.

No, I just looked really young. I'm far from old looking now, but I easily could pass for like 14-15 in my passport photo.
