A little further digging....

He was investigated for this relationship with a student, probably forced to resign, got another job pending a background check. He must have realized that this investigation might jeopardize his background check, resulting in him not being hired. This would cause him to be deported, seeing how he had a work visa.

Probably got pissed that this would haunt him, and went off the deep end.

Common misconception. Not all that study psychology do what you all would consider psychotherapy or counseling. This guy was much more into the field that I am in, which is human factors. A lot of his research centered on alarms and alarm systems for use by pilots in the cockpit.
To another point, you would be surprised how many people with mental disorders go into psychotherapy related fields of study to try to work out their own problems. I believe that in order to become a practicing psychology, you actually have to undergo a psychological exam yourself.
