This was taken by Spirit rover on Mars:

http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/spirit_m1434.html

What is the shiny disc with what appears to be face reminiscent of an ancient culture?

Of course the scale is not given for the image but it is interesting none the less.

Strange hollowed out "metronome" looking object

Skull on the lower left

Another coin like disc:

"Cowbell" 1/3 of the way up from the bottom on the right side in the dark patch

I'm not claiming to know what these things are by any means. Just thought they were interesting. There are of course tons on tinfoil hat sites who jump on them.

Why would this be interesting unless you believe it's something other than rocks and sand?

Given the wide range of things used as currency by premodern humans, of course we would expect aliens to use the type that ended up favored by classical and modern Europeans.

I'm interested in the pics, but only because it's like "hey here's pretty detailed pics of the surface of another planet"

So are the tinfoil folks admitting we made it to mars, or is this another NASA hoax like the Moon?

The rover has a disc-shaped abrasion tool that grinds into materials in order to examine their components better:

http://athena.cornell.edu/the_mission/ins_rat.html

The picture above is undoubtedly one of these abraded areas, with the central area being from the tip of the bit, and filled with dust.

Why would you assume a Martian civilization would be advanced?

^^Well, they are advanced enough to have money that will last longer than any building or vehicle or any other monument on the planet, right?

Well of course, since aliens populated our planet via genetic engineering of earth's natural species its no wonder that we look like them
