The people running this place are morons.

The reason "memberships" are required in NC is if a bar/club does not sell food they have to classify as a "members only club"....hence the stupid sign in sheets places that don't sell food have, you are "signing up" for your membership.

This place sells food and identifies itself as a sports bar (don't all sports bars sell food?) so it should be exempt from having a membership requirement. Its even open for lunch on the weekends.
