I have a friend from graduate school moving to the area soon for school, and she is asking me about the area. Now, I have a pretty good idea from what I can remember, but am aware that in the many many years since I've lived in Raleigh, some shit has probably changed.

So, here's where you come in....
Give me a refresher of some good/bad areas around the university
Perhaps some shit for entertainment
Rental companies to stay away from
Nice, quiet, safe places to live at or around $1150/mo
Dick and cunt pics
etc...

I'll check back with this thread later to make sure the email I'm composing has everything. Even after I write this email, it's not too late to contribute to this thread, as I will most likely call this girl soon anyway.

Thanks TheWolfingWeb! You're the breast!

Nothing really bad around the university but if you keep going towards downtown on Western it gets worse.

The Nat Sci Museum just opened a new addition and the Downtown Amphitheater opened last year.

All the apartments are owned by Preiss, all the houses north of campus are owned by slum lords.

Is she looking for an apartment, townhouse, or house to rent? How long is her max commute time?

If she's down with commuting, most of the grad students I know at State rent in Cary or downtown Raleigh.

she would probably be OK with commuting, but not too far.

She's probably used to apartments, coming from Norfolk which is kind of urban. I'm willing to bet she hasn't even considered that she can afford a townhouse here.

I would say the cameron village area is perfect. Good location. Not a terrible price.

Otherwise I would look for a place along Tryon.

She probably wants to avoid places along Gorman (in between western and avent ferry) because they are sketchy as balls. And anything with the words "University" or "Wolf' in the name of the complex. Simply because those companies know how to take advantage of unsuspecting students.

For cool spots I would say check out: Farmer's Market, NC Fairgrounds, Lake Wheeler, Falls Lake, City Market, downtown Raleigh, Seaboard Station, Artspace on First Fridays, etc.

Everyone has their preferences for bars and restaurants but I've found these to be pretty well liked establishments: C-Grace, Calaveras, Havanas, Landmark, Raleigh Times, Sitti, Chucks, Capital Club, Sushi Blues

cameron village area is a great location, can be a little too 'collegy' depending on how close to clark you live but the commute to campus is a short walk/bike ride/2min drive. if she likes to go downtown this is probably the place to shoot for as it is just a 5 min drive/cab ride.

i also like most of the apt complexes on jones franklin behind crossroads, e.g centerview, enclave, legacy. its only like a 7 min drive to campus plus you are right off 40/440 so it is pretty convenient. im living at centerview now and i have no complaints.

Cameron Village. There are new apartments going up next to the intersection of Morgan and Hillsborough St. that should be that kind of young/hipsterish/downtowner type of vibe to it. Or maybe Cameron Ct and Boylan Heights. If not this area, Camden Crossing and the Trailwood area is pretty nice and can offer more space.
