coyotes hunt during the day. they're not primarily nocturnal.

My dad has gotten several coyotes on his wildlife camera in Huntersville. The latest one looked a little slim/lanky for a "pure" coyote, I wonder if they're mixing with domesticated dogs there.

I'm pretty sure a larger dog would scare a single coyote away; especially accompanied by a person. It's when they're in a pack that you have to worry about your pet's safety.

Well they're a pest and have been increasing their range nationwide. Being able to kill them at will is a measure to prevent the issue from getting worse.

Predators have a knack for going for defenseless prey (be it something young, weak, naive, or injured). Put a baby out where it is unprotected and vulnerable, something might come along and take it. Leave your domesticated pets outside, unattended (or worse, chained to something)...don't be completely surprised if that coyote/bear/wolf/mountain lion/manbearpig that has been stealthily cruising through neighborhoods picks up on it and eats it.

Pretty sure recent telemetry studies of mountain lions have shown that it is not uncommon that they sneak into neighborhoods, enter people's garages, etc. without anyone but the researchers ever knowing.

farmers do it to protect livestock, others do it to protect pets/children. those things are opportunists and will attack pretty much anything smaller than itself for food.

I say more power to the coyotes. It looks like they've adapted quite well given their circumstances combined with humans wiping out other top predators in a given area. If a parent or adult can't monitor their child/pet and the worst (subjective) happens, who's really to blame?

I'm just trying to understand the egocentric mentality that can find it ethical to accept killing something they either fear or find to be an inconvenience.

Well, there are wildlife management concerns with regards to predator-prey imbalances and zoonosis (among other things), so in a world that has been mostly transformed for the benefit of our own species, sometimes humans have to step in and act as some sort of control. But don't take that statement as me denying that there aren't people in this world that enjoy killing certain types of wildlife purely for the sake of killing/fear/whatever...I study rattlesnakes...I know the concept all too well. However, when people discuss their desire to kill something legally, it's not just legal because of some loophole. When indeed done legally, hunting provides funds for quality wildlife management and ideally helps sustain populations even outside of the target species.

I suppose my annoyance stems from making the mistake of listening to KC and Carmen this morning on 106.1 and they were talking about the zoo that was flooded and the polar bear that escaped. That fat bitches first words on the matter was that she'd shoot it..... It's this "shoot first because I'm human rawr rawr" mentality that is horrifically pervasive and it drives me nuts.
