i like C# a lot, but I mean any of the ones you listed and many more are perfectly good languages to learn. if you have any specific career objectives that you hope to strengthen by learning a specific language, that could help narrow it down a bit 7/18/2012 3:03:45 PM

But seriously, what's a good but affordable way to learn Spanish? Wake Tech/NCSU classes? Online stuff? I've heard nothing bad bad reviews about RS - just words and pictures, no real learning of the language. 7/18/2012 3:13:09 PM

Depends on what you're looking to do with the language and/or where you're expecting it to get you.
Learning Python is fun, easy, and you can do a lot with it (especially if you're into webby things and learn Django as well). 7/18/2012 3:18:26 PM

^^ In that case, work hard at C/C++ if you want to challenge yourself and get smarter, or C# if you want to learn how to do exactly what you already do but with a slightly different syntax and libraries. 7/18/2012 3:24:04 PM

^^^ if you already know Java, I suggest learning something not very similar. python is a good language, popular enough you'll be able to find help online as you learn, and easy to quickly start making actual things with it rather than just hello world learn the syntax type stuff

i studied both spanish and french through RS. i don't think it would be that effective completely on its own, but it was VERY effective as a supplement to traditional classes/instruction. really helps you piece things together.
oh, and i like perl. 7/18/2012 3:50:10 PM

C is not a useable language unless you are doing embedded applications. C# is just about the same thing as Java. Anything you can do in C++, you can do with java or c#. I would go with Perl, as Perl scripting is very desirable these days, from at least an employer perspective. Python, as mentioned earlier, is also useful

If you haven't already you should go ahead and learn Python and/or Perl
And then Fortran if you do any computation/non-UI applications

I mentioned to my husband trying to get back into some basic stuff, and he tossed out perl and python as his recommended starting points. Methinks he stopped using perl when he came to his current company and I have no clue what he's been using lately - I just know he doesn't like it. 7/18/2012 5:10:55 PM

I know some VBA and SAS but I may have to learn C# when I move schools.
I'm kind of sad I never took serious programming class, but when I see what the other guys in CE who have skillz are working on I'm glad I'm not wasting my time. They get abused. 7/18/2012 5:11:05 PM
