Both are correct. Gray is the American English variant; Grey is the typical form in other subsets of English.

I misspelled gray/grey very early on in a spelling bee in 4th grade I think, turns out I was bamboozled!

If they said you were incorrect, then indeed you were bamboozled. I would sue.

Interestingly, even in American English, the dog breed is greyhound. Well, maybe not interesting really, just an inconsistency.
