Are there still prison farms and work gangs? I've never understood why prisoners don't seem to contribute more to their upkeep. It seems like it would be a better life than sitting around waiting to get stabbed in the shower for not joining the correct hate group.

There's a prison farm in Guilford County out in djeternal land. I took some old electronics there to recycled a few weeks ago.

Not sure if there is any documented cases of this (never really looked either)...but one of my old deceased relatives used to do work for the NC DOT and claimed prisoner work crews declined because of lobbying by construction/contracting companies to get that work.

My dad works there. Well, he did until he retired last week.

That place is a joke though. They grow some stuff and sell it, but mostly just flowers. They end up throwing away about 90% of the stuff that they grow instead of eating/selling it. They actually buy tomatoes to use in the kitchen instead of using the ones that they grow on the farm. They got a bunch of bees and started making honey last year, but one guard does literally all of the work in his spare time to produce the honey instead of letting the prisoners work. That place is such a waste of money, it's not even funny.

^^^ I disagree. We get all of our veggie plants there every year, as well as all of our flowers. They have every single variety of vegetable, including like a dozen different tomato varieties. I am not sure where you are coming up with "mostly flowers". If more people knew about it, it would be more successful. I guess it doesn't help that they are in the middle of nowhere. I try to tell everyone I know that is into gardening to go out there to get their plants. Definitely worth the drive, imo
