You guys are intentionally being obtuse. Do you really, truly believe that 2,000 page bills are read when representatives are only given a day to read them? Come on. This is how shit like the PATRIOT act got passed.

I've mostly stopped posting here because of this kind of behavior. You all pile onGeniuSxBoY because it's easier than contributing anything of value. Even when he posts legitimate stuff, you can't be bothered to come up with a real response.

I don't think you understand what "reading" it means. It doesn't mean "leisure" reading. It means fact checking and understanding the bill, too.

Most of you can't even understand or read paragraphs longer than 3 sentences. Imagine having to read a 600 page post.

I agree with Rand. GeniuSxBoY made a good thread and good point.

My only problem with Rand's rant was he was attacking the democrats while the Republicans are just as guilty. It's not a one party issue, it's an issue for all of them.

Just think about our legislative process for one minute. I know a lot of you guys are technocrats (i.e. we should have "the experts" run society, ergo we should have "the experts" run the state), but these people running the government are not qualified to do shit. There is no rule of law. They ignore procedure, they ignore the Constitution, they create this omnibus legislation, and unless someone is able to find the bullshit in the bill in the absurdly small time window they're given to do so, it gets passed.

This is not how things should be. Bills should be read before they are passed. Bills should not be so complex that the people and even the politicians are incapable of knowing what they are voting for.

I was a political science major. I've heard the mind boggling justifications for this shit. "Society is just so complex, so we need complex legislation to regulate society". No. Fuck no. That is a fucking smokescreen and if you have an ounce of sense you recognize that.

IIRC the provisions in the bills are talked about among the Congressional staffers long before the final bills reach the members' desks; however there could be a problem with leaving the minority party out of the loop, which I know happened on the regular when the Rethugs were in control during the Bu$h years.

I remember ranting about this years ago and during the ObamaCare debate. People touting how "x" is a great piece of legislation and that the other side needs to vote for it... meanwhile it's a 1,200 page document that's only been available for 6 hours. I mean really; you read that already? You know it's good legislation? Just party-line politics at its worst.

Hell, it'd be a nice start if they would write the fucking bills in the first place. Instead some lobbyist "suggests" something and one of our elected officials introduces it for a vote. Most of the time the people sponsoring the bill don't even know what the fuck is in it.

Things like TARP and the PATRIOT act are a great example of another equally dangerous problem, the idea that we have to pass something immediately, whether or not it is a good law is secondary. Every time you see a piece of legislation with someone's name on it (Megan's law, Brady bill, etc.) assume that it is a terrible idea. It is proposed because our legislatures are more concerned with doing something and proving that they're concerned than with doing something that will make a difference and is the right thing.

In short, fuck the legislative branch. We've got plenty of laws, just stop already.

^ likewise, you have to be pretty naive to disbelieve that the PATRIOT Act and Obamacare weren't collecting dust in someone's desk drawer waiting for the day for a terrorist attack and a liberal president with control of both houses of congress

x happens, then the act gets taken out of the drawer, dusted off and updated to current standards, dropped on the floor, and voted on two days later

this is (one reason) why the federal government is the problem

^The provisions that would end up in the PPACA were debated on for years in public before they were written into the bill and sent off to Congress; there should have been more time for the staffers on all sides to verify that the bill was indeed what would be expected from the numerous negotiations, but it wasn't a complete and utter surprise either.

I'd imagine something similar was involved with the USA PATRIOT Act, except that it was less public because the entities who had that long wish list were more secretive, like the police and spy agencies.

No bills with a word count longer than the US Constitution sans amendments. Need a longer bill? You'll have to pass each part separately. Of course, politics being what it is, this would just lead to newspeak like wording of bills, and bills which basically read "A bill to make the items contained in Proposals ####, #####, #### and #### into law."
