^I did that with my 1995 Honda...changed the oil every 8 or 9 thousand miles. Coulda been what ultimately led to her demise...
My new car says it only needs the oil changed every 10k miles.

Once ran into a girl who hadn't had her oil changed in 40,000 miles. I don't know how her vehicle was still running.

about 1 day too long. dropped my engine on 40. That $20 oil change turned into $4k real quick.

needless to say, I change it every 3,000 miles now

3000 is generally overkill with almost any normal car and today's oils. I change the oil in my truck (and anything else that I run conventional oil in) every 5k.

in my Corvette, I run full-synthetic (Mobil 1 extended protection) and just change it when the computer says so (it monitors throttle position and RPM and stuff, so the mileage varies...prob 10-12k on average).

it's been just over two years, but I've only driven about 2k miles. I should probably get it changed sometime soon.

Yeah, I'm pretty much bullshittin'. I change the oil in the Tribute around every 7k, in the Envoy every 5k, and I haven't gotten to my first oil change on the Sierra yet. But it's a '94 and 4WD, so I will probably get it changed at 5k as well.

the way my car is acting now, i dont think im going to bother getting another one. every time i drive it i wonder if im going to end up on the side of the road.

the day it happens, i'll probably just abandon it, or leave the keys on the dashboard and walk home.

I get the oil changed at 3k, that's what everybody does here. It does come out very dark around 3k if you check it with the dipstick. I guess it is down to the weather here (too much sand and very high temperatures most of the year).

One time I left it till 5k, that's the longest.

About 23k give or take a thou. Fuck all that 3k noise. Fuck all that 5k noise. I change it when I feel like it. Which is fucking never.

But then I add about 2 gallons between changes. iVTEC oil burning beast.

11k
To be fair, that was on Mobil 1 full synth. Only about 8 months. Factory interval on dino oil was either 5k or 6k, so I generally aimed for 7-8k on synthetic.

Buddy of mine uses that Mobil 1 formulation that claims it can go for 15k and he usually takes it to/past 20k. Though he drives so much he still ends up changing it every 6 months or so.

definitely did that with an old piece of shit I used to have - prob put 80k miles on that bitch without changing the oil and filter

ultimate demise of the car? someone pulled out in front of me and it was totaled.

within the last year.

it's a 2002 acura. the cat heat shield is rusted through, and hanging off, ratting like crazy. at least i think that's what's rattling when im in first between 0-1500 rpms. gets worse if im turning left. the cat is going, but the flanges are rusted through, would require some decent work to replace at this point. the tranny is starting to act up. when it rains water gets into the spare tire well, and it's starting to rust out. i've stopped the point where it comes in, but the damage is done with the back seat cushions having been soaked through a few times and started to mildew. the car was wrecked in 2003, got up onto a telephone pole support wire. 150k miles. paint is peeling from several spots, mostly from retards who cannot parallel park when i went into philly a lot and would just use bumping into cars as notice to go the other way. the interior is gross. one window wont roll down, and when it does loses the track to go up. solenoids on the power locks are shot. the rear o2 sensor is shot, or likely just really dirty, since it doesn't throw the error code if it's raining. the ac sucks ass and can't keep up with the texas sun. also, i live in south texas and have a black car with black leather, and no tint. i am a masochist.

other than that, it's been an awesome car!

Around 50,000 miles.

It was a lease.

Still had the factory oil filter on it when I finally did change it.

~8k. I've been told to go until the filter itself needs to be replaced. The oil always looks great still when we change it.

it depends very heavily on how you drive. young males should change the oil in their car more frequently.

also in a mild stable climate like NC, you should run single weight oil. those chemicals they put in there to make the oil behave thinner when it is cold wear out and stop doing that job very easily.

Motor oil has a certain thickness (viscosity) depending on it's temperature. since the engine is much colder when you start it up in the morning, it's nice to have oil in there that can be more liquidy when it's cold. The motor oil companies accomplish this by using special chemicals. It's a different secret blend for each company. Those chemicals break down quickly and your oil then behaves like single weight oil with about 10% non-lubricating useless garbage in it. The same thing happens if you mix brands or if you "top it off" with the wrong brand.

If you drive hard or you don't change your oil on schedule + u don't live in the desert or the arctic = you should run single weight oil. like if your car calls for 10W30, you should use HD30. If your car calls for 5W20, you should run HD20. Your oil will do a much better job lubricating and make your engine last longer.

Last point is this: it's your oil filter that needs to be changed, not the oil. so in the end, disregard this oil crap and change the damn oil.

Last Last point: you can get better gas mileage by running thinner oil. this is a good tactic if you're going to drive easy in a car you don't own or one that is about to get sold or thrown away soon.

pilgrimshoes, when you getting a new ride? I vote for a big ass texas truck.

As for me, I think I went about a year with my little S-10 pickup, but I had only done about 3000 miles in that time. In the current car I've never gone more than 3500 miles/3 months.
