My dad is/was a FOB and will eat Chinese food on the regular. My mom won't touch the stuff. Worst of all is trying to get her to walk into an Asian grocery store. Smelled like fish.

FOB means "Fresh Off Boat"; it is used for an immigrant from somewhere outside North America and implies that all such immigrants were poor and used rickety dinghies or something to get to the USA.

Actually it implies that they took a boat to get here and that they made said ocean voyage only recently.

It implies nothing about the condition of the boat or the wealth of the immigrant, only about his assimilation into US culture or lack thereof.
