i just got back from puerto rico

while there, I

1. went to the kioskos (during daylight)
2. got drunk as shit in san juan viejo, san sebastian strip
3. checked out the fort in old san juan
4. drove on shitty roads through the center of the island
a)to go to Gauvate, and eat pig
b)to go through chorco azul
5. hiked in the rainforest, put my dick in a waterfall right near La Mina
6. went out to Vieques, checked out the bioluminescent bay
7. gambled at Rio Mar
8. stayed at Gran Malia

was this a pretty good trip? were there things we missed that would necessitate another trip down there?

Puerto Rico is fun for a few weeks but if you read up on the condition of the island, its dangerous as hell there. Unless youre going to be making serious money and dont mind sweating your ass off year round, I wouldnt even consider it.

My Spanish is limited to high school/NCSU courses I took 10 years ago. The vast majority of the people I met in San Juan, Ponce, and at all of the tourist places (snorkeling, ziplining, mall, casinos, etc.) spoke fluent English and I had no trouble communicating. In some of the more distant areas I met more folks who did not speak any English, but my limited Spanish and a smile was usually enough to get by.

If there is one thing you need to brush up on it's basic navigation stuff. It took me a few minutes to remember the difference between "Este" and "Oeste" (East and West) in terms of reading highway signs, but after that it was pretty easy.

Tolls surprised me a couple times. Maybe there were signs, but I missed them or couldn't read them. Keep some cash/change in your car for when you get to one.

Driving is somewhat crazy there. I'd be surprised if 10% of the cars on the road would pass a NC inspection. You will run up on cars going 25MPH on the highway with absolutely no tail lights at night. You will have people pass you going 100MPH on the highway on a daily basis. Motorcyclists split lanes; give them room if possible. You do have to drive a bit more aggressively and defensively than you do here IMO. It seems crazy at first, but once you get used to it it's not so bad. I'm sure it pales in comparison to a lot of places.

Driving there was an experience. I don't think I saw a single car without a ding or scratch on it. Even our new looking rental had a bumper that kept trying to pop loose. On our way back from a rainforest hike we hit some heavy traffic coming into San Juan. Our driver decided to just use the shoulder as a lane for a few miles. Wouldn't have been a big deal if we weren't in a passenger van going 50 down a narrow shoulder in the rain.

On my way back from Vieques to San Juan there was a similar situation, but it was caused by a bad wreck several miles ahead. Literally hundreds of cars took to the shoulder/emergency lane when traffic stopped in the main vehicle lanes. Within 15 minutes the shoulder was completely stopped as well and we were all sitting in what was essentially a parking lot.

The firetrucks and ambulances could be spotted a mile back, but it took forever for them to crawl through it all as traffic slowly cleared to open a lane for them to get by. It was pathetic and I felt terrible for the people in the wreck who were waiting for medical attention. Unfortunately there were many times that I felt very disappointed in the people there.
