I have 30mbps and I can't watch a streaming 480p video, it's awful. I assumed it was TWC throttling like crazy.

twc isn't throttling it. google isn't making any money on it so they've resorted to adding a ton of ads and throttling it to keep costs down

I have probs viewing trending videos... It seems the interface sometimes only provides me with recommended videos vs allowing me to browse the most popular category.

This worked for me on my Macbook. The Windows instructions didn't work for my other laptop, although it has Windows XP.

I was trying to listen to this earlier today and it was so slow it took 40 minutes for 2:50 of the video to load.

The fucking ads are lightning quick, but then the actual video sits and loads for 5 minutes.

For iptables (like on a Linux box, or in your DD-WRT/Tomato router):

/usr/sbin/iptables -A INPUT -s 173.194.55.0/24 -j DROP
/usr/sbin/iptables -A INPUT -s 206.111.0.0/16 -j DROP
(the /usr/sbin/ bit could be removed if not on DD-WRT)

Apparently it's not just YouTube, or Twitch, or Vimeo, or even Netflix: Tons of streaming-video services use ISP-managed cache servers like the clogged ones that these firewall rules are blocking; usually the load-balancing works out fine and allows the main services to stay up.

To watch a ten second video, I must now watch a 30 second ad. Or when they put a 2 minute ad, you can skip in 5 seconds, I end up watching the ad because it is interesting. I spend more time watching ads than actual videos. And everything is a copyright infringement.

Adblock Plus for Google Chrome (and also Chrome Adblock) does that just fine, and so does Adblock Plus for Firefox, and possibly even some well-chosen Tracking Protection Lists for IE9+ could do the job (like the ones based on EasyList).

Blocking this worked for me

206.111.0.0/16

right, but the mitchribar didn't work for me with 173.194.55.0/24 added in. I have better luck with just 206.111.0.0/16. Why I don't know. Shouldn't make a difference if there's multiple blocks or if 173 is before 206. So just dropping the 173 is what worked for me the best. It's odd that it did make a difference. No idea why.

TIL that 'tis better to use REJECT than DROP: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~peterb/network/drop-vs-reject

/usr/sbin/iptables -A INPUT -s 173.194.55.0/24 -j REJECT
/usr/sbin/iptables -A INPUT -s 206.111.0.0/16 -j REJECT
fix'd

Methinks these rules cause most streams to fail to load in the Twitch app.

Adblock doesn't completely remove the preview videos on youtube...it just gives you a black screen that says there is an adblocker and a countdown...so you still have to wait

Some part of my content-blocking strategy must be working, like maybe my use of Peter Lowe's Ad Servers as a PAC file.

For U-Verse, the range apparently also goes from 173.194.55.0 to 173.194.55.255, or 173.194.55.0/24; more generally some investigation with Firebug, Fiddler, Dragonfly, Chrome Dev Tools, Wireshark, etc. is in order.

Other IP addresses and ranges to watch out for include 173.194.54.0/24, 173.194.57.46, 173.194.24.249, and 64.214.227.42: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,28049907

Notably, the range I just posted and the one I mentioned earlier could be combined into 173.194.54.0/23

I get some delays, and occasionally some YouTube videos fail to load, but it seems to be more of a problem with the PeerBlock way (which blocks both incoming and outgoing connections, with no way to specify just one direction) than anything else.

Maybe this only works decently when your connection was fast to begin with; for me it's not much improvement, and I'm frequently unable to buffer any more video, so I got rid of the IP-blockage ITT.
