someone wants me to call one of their former employers and act like im a company getting a job reference to see what they say

how do these calls go, and how do i not come off as a fake

or should i just tell him if he is that worried about it, dont put that job down

When I'm acting as a reference for co workers, the potential new employer will ask if said person is eligible for rehire. Some times they ask for dates of employment and job title but I usually refuse to answer those type questions.

Most large companies have policies that restrict/prohibit giving any information that is not completely verifiable/factual about an ex employee.

The reason for this is when they give negative information, if you believe it is not true...and are harmed by it in some way, you then have standing to sue them.

The last corporation I worked for made reference checkers call an 800 number that was administered by a vendor, they would only give start date, separation date, and if you are "eligible for rehire". The vendor would only give out that information to parties that paid for it.
