Raise the age of using an illegal drug to another age that means nothing since the drug is illegal for any age

i didn't read the article and so i'm just guessing about its assertion, but...

...it is perfectly reasonable to assume that any given drug (be it alcohol or THC or whatever) enjoyed during key developmental years (up to 16-18, depending on the person) may have a quantifiable effect on, well, development

" The study used data gathered from a cohort of 1,037 children born in 1972-73 in Dunedin, New Zealand. IQ tests carried out when they were 13 were compared with IQ tests completed when they were 38.

Five per cent of the cohort said they had started persistent cannabis use – defined as weekly sessions – before the age of 18."

Did they control for other drugs? Environmental factors? Sketchy research.

I love the use of a dirty, scabby, herpetic whore smoking a joint on the street in the article.

[words]--just ruminations of an ex-pothead. you should probably skip this post.

I poked smot on the regular for several years when I was younger. I tapered off in my early 20s then quit altogether a couple years ago but I am completely sympathetic to the practice, mindset and lifestyle, and still find myself wanting to smoke every once in a while (though I do abstain). Maybe one day when I've landed that ideal job and have everything squared away I'll pick it back up, who knows.

Anyway, all that is to say that I completely agree. Pot definitely dulled the edge a little bit. I used to be stupid smart, everything came easily to me, quick-witted and all that. Not as much anymore...I find myself having to work just a little bit harder to wrap my head around complex concepts or dig my wit out of the depths. That's not to say I'm less intelligent, I'm fully aware I've got a leg or two up on the competition. But I feel that I'm just not as bright, for lack of a better word, as I used to be.

However, weed did expand my personality and perspective, and gave me brilliant new ways of looking at things that perhaps wouldn't have come naturally. What it provided me was invaluable and really stoked my right-brain development; to this day, one of the most common (positive) remarks I get is regarding the strength and balance of my logical and artistic sides. I honestly think pot had something to do with that.

So until I have reason to believe otherwise, maybe it'll take a lifetime of reflection, I'll say my time with marijuana afforded me zero net gain/loss intellectually. If I had it all to do over again, knowing what I know, I'd still take that first joint from my buddy on that overcast, choppy day out on Lake Norman. But I probably wouldn't have started hanging out with people that frequented Widespread shows.

i have no personal experience to draw upon, but this rings true to me...as you noted, i can see pot dulling the "edge" that might make a person very sharp, but that slowing them down might open them up to possibilities they wouldn't have considered

there was a time a thought pot was "bad" (mostly because i saw smart people becoming dumb people), but now i think you just have to have a certain level of maturity to get something out of it that isn't an escape from reality and personal responsibility
