I have the Western Digital powerline adapter. It works amazingly well.

Just splice an ethernet cable to a power cord...

...for cheap and easy ethernet over power line.

They do, but you have to have:

1) Electrical wiring that isn't put together by morons
2) Clean signal - Plugging the transmitter/receiver into a UPS seems to work

Your mileage may vary, but if you have a newer (post-1985) house, you should be good.

I've had luck with the 85Mbit Netgear Powerline adapters onsale at newegg a while back as well as the $75 Netgear that's also a 4 port switch at one end.
