So, I have this monitor that was working great with absolutely no problems and while moving some stuff around the connector on the end was totally destroyed. So I had an Idea and I'm not sure if it's possible or not but I would like to try it, only I'm in need of some guidance. So the video cable is integrated obviously or else I'd just buy another cable. I tried cutting open a spare VGA cable but the wires didn't match up (not just the color of the individual wires, but the number of wires also.) So since it didn't match up it's just been sitting. I picked up a 30 foot DVI cable the other day discounted that had a bad connector on one end and a perfectly good one on the other. My thought is that the video cable can be spliced and not only that, I should be able to splice a DVI cable to a VGA cable. A DVI/VGA adapter isn't anything fancy, it's just set up so the right wires meet. I have a few images and some illustrations. If anyone has any helpful advice I'd appreciate it. Really looking forward to making this work, plus it's a neat little project.

You need to splice it to a DVI-A cable, not DVI-D: VGA and DVI-A are analog, while DVI-D is digital and requires a separately powered converter to take VGA signals.
I learned this the hard way once while searching for a "DVI-D to VGA adapter" after having been familiar with DVI-to-VGA adapters that turned out to only work with the DVI-A side of things. 9/9/2012 4:43:03 PM |

Are you able to tell from that photograph whether that extension cable is a DVI-a or a DVI-d? I'll try to pull up something online in the meantime. I'm guessing with my luck I have the wrong one, but let's say for miracle it's the right DVI cable that I need to splice... Have you ever ran across a DVI to VGA wiring diagram online. I couldn't find anything suitable. 9/9/2012 5:04:50 PM |

I can't tell from the photo of the cable, just from the drawing that says "DVI-D Male Dual Link" 9/9/2012 5:17:17 PM |

if you open it up further, i bet there's a header on the motherboard with semi labeled pins that would make this job easier 9/10/2012 12:12:10 AM |

I appreciate that info on the header, I'll have a look at that. 9/11/2012 10:26:21 AM |

Man, fuck those monitors with integrated cables. I hated them. 9/11/2012 11:55:28 AM |

Okay, let me shed some light on this:
First up, that DVI cable is digital only. It will not work. Almost no DVI cables have analog wiring. If you want to "extend" with something you'll need to use a VGA cable, but I wouldn't recommend it . . . anything past 10-12ft or so and VGA gets a bit wonky (especially with splices involved).
Second, it is more than a matter of just twisting wires together. Those thicker red, green, and blue wires in your VGA cable are actually miniature coaxial cables. They have an inner core and an outer sleeve, and take a very steady hand and great care to strip properly. 9/11/2012 6:31:26 PM |

wait, vga is just mini BNC? THE MORE YOU KNOW! 9/11/2012 6:33:56 PM |

^ Lol, yep. Converting from 5 BNC to VGA and vice versa is just a matter if slicing the wires right. Now combined sync and sync on green is where things get tricky. 9/11/2012 7:24:07 PM |

I guess you'll need a VGA-to-DVI-A adapter after all (if you're using this monitor for what I think you're using it for)... 9/11/2012 8:31:54 PM |

Ok so I may have a solution here but I still need a little help.
So I just found in a big ass box of wires a VGA cable with what appears to be almost the same internal wiring. I think there is one extra on the separate cable than what the one has that is integrated to the monitor. 5 The colors aren't matched up exactly so I'm not 100% sure on how to go about it exactly. Here's a photo of the integrated wiring on the monitor exposed and spread out right by those in a separate VGA cable.
Also, this will probably help none at all but it's a MAG LT917s monitor (w/ integrated video cable, VGA) and the separate VGA cable I have is by BELKIN and the model number is F3H982-08. I'm going to try to get a brighter, easier to see image of those exposed wires if that'll help.

19" 4:3 analog lcd with 6+ year old caps and backlight dimming...
throw it away and buy a new (to you) monitor. I bought 2x 24's for $99 each a few months back. 9/12/2012 8:20:33 AM |
