Yea, it happens naturally. But 2 males corralled to fight is staged and something that is generally frowned upon in other taxa (regardless of whether injury/death occurs).

This is probably the least 'cruel' thing humans do to insects. Cruelty is subjective and it has been shown insects do not have the capacity to detect pain.

The reason why entomology is such a cool science is because this is the only taxa that is socially acceptable to exploit and experiment on.

Well, I didn't say it was cruel, just that it made me sad (mostly for the fact it's hosted by NCSM) and that sort of stuff is generally frowned upon. But really, none of the beetles will really injure one another, so it's not that bad.

And I'd argue there are other taxa whose exploitation is socially accepted, but I'll refrain from further derailing your thread.

I mean, they get fed more than any wild insect... and since they are in captivity they typically live longer than their wild brethren. The most 'danger'/harm they are exposed to is during outreaches and Bugest where kids get to hold them.

Maybe it was just me, but compared to previous years, this years was kinda lame. Ton of vendors outside, no bug food (themed or otherwise). Not a lot of bug groups outside. And inside was either hissing cockroaches or brown praying mantises.

and yea, if your little shit came up to me and said they really wanted to hold the walking stick or the mantid and then dropped it on the ground, and kicked it away from you and then screamed in my face as I had to crawl on the ground before it got stomped out (you know who you are) and then just laughed it off like, kids will be kids.... yea, I don't care and I hate your kid.
