the metro area has a population of 5.8 million. The homicide rate is 21.9 per 100,000 per year. That means that in 3 weeks...

5.8e6*21.9/100000*3/52 = 73 people

About are killed. Well, it's safer outside DC so it's less than this. Doesn't change the fact that it was probably dumb for your family to be worried about getting shot by the sniper when they were more likely, even within that time frame, to be shot normally.

All of the shootings were outside of D.C. (well one was just inside the border) and one was as far south as Ashland, VA.

The national homicide rate is 4.3, even if you use this rate you get a higher number than the rate of people killed by the sniper. In other words, the sniper probably doubled the homicide rate in the larger area for 3 weeks.

I have been reading about it this week. I was drunk for most of 2002.

Apparently, Lee Boyd Malvo has been apologizing from prison. He is in solitary confinement, no contact with other inmates and in his cell 23 hours a day.

John Muhammed (Muhammed was not his birth name, it was adopted as an adult) has been executed, cremated, and his ashes were given to his children....surprising they accepted the ashes since he was looking for their mother to kill in DC during the killing spree.

The one that Malvo says actually haunts him is when he shot Linda Franklin, her husband was standing beside her and turned to see her shot in the head, he felt something hit him at the moment she was hit, he later found out it was her blood and brain matter.

The bullet exited her head and left a star shaped hole in her skull.

Malvo says the husbands eyes are still burned in his memory and actually haunt him.

Malvo getting off with life in prison = Pussification of America.

I will say this though. He went to jail at 17, will never get out, and will probably be in solitary forever since his safety can not be guaranteed among the inmates, life in prison is actually a harsher sentence.
