What are you going to listen to, and do you prefer flat response or some extra punch in your music?

[Edited on October 4, 2012 at 11:18 PM. Reason : And do they have to look hip or you just need them to sound good?]

ok in order of importance

1. i dont care if they are ugly if that makes them cheeper all else equal

2. i dont really know how to explain quality but i listen to evertyhing. i guess my #1 priority would be listening to rap music while running so i like bass but still want to hear the voices clearly.

JVC Flats. Cheap, great sound. Check out the reviews. They aren't the best in the world, but for what you pay, you make out like a bandit.

Sony XB500 or XB700 ($60-100). Comfiest cushions I have ever worn and crushing bass response. Sometimes they have them on display in Best Buy if you wanted to hear them before buying. For rap music I can think of no better alternative in the price range.

[Edited on October 5, 2012 at 10:40 AM. Reason : they are HUGE however, 40 and 50mm drivers and over-the ear design]

Beats sound horrible. Almost no mids and bloated lows.

Try to find a pair of Sennheiser HD 280s. Think you can get them on Amazon for ~$90. They're better than the more expensive beats.

Personally I prefer IEMs. Better sound isolation and overall sound. Plus I get sweaty wearing big head phones especially outside.

I've heard good things about Klipsch's earbuds, and you can get them for <$75.

Being a MartinLogan junkie, though, I'd love to hear their new earbuds...although, really, it's kinda pointless in that they certainly aren't electrostatic ...but I trust that they wouldn't attach their name to anything that didn't sound phenomenal. They're a good bit more than $75, though.

^had no idea they made any. They're only $150. Looks like only single drivers though.

I'm a Shure guy. The triple drivers on my SE535s are amaaazinngggg.

my ears don't have the natural flesh that holds buds in. they fall right out. the ones the hook over the outside of your ear tightly like powerbeats would probably work on me but not buds.

No not ear buds like apple buds but IEMS (in ear monitors). They actually fit in your ear canal. Ear buds (like the ones that just sit in your ear) sound horrible. You need a complete seal for the sound isolation and heavy bass.

I have a pair of Klipsch's...cant remember the model, but they were ~$80. They sound better than any pair of in-ear buds that I've used that cost less than $200 or so.

I wear them every day for working out. They've held up great to a few months of constant use while running/cycling (indoors).

my klipsch's are in-ear earbuds, if that pic was directed at me.

But I agree, people working out with huge over-the-ear cans just look stupid as hell.

the ear pluggers are a traffic hazard though.

I don't wear them biking but running I run on the side walk and make sure to look both ways. I run with Sennheiser CX 680's but wear SE 535s the rest of the time.

as usual, i'm all like "zomg, u r dum 4 paying $$$ 4 head phones!!!1"

all kidding aside, though, you're going to have a hard time beating JLAB J2 buds for $15: http://www.amazon.com/Premium-Noise-Isolating-Earbuds-Headphones-Motorola/dp/B001GS8FZ2/

i actually got 2 pairs for $15 (they were running a promotion through amazon and i've seen it come up on slickdeals a couple of times)

i'm far from an audio snob, but i can definitely tell (and appreciate) the difference between cheap buds and those of quality...and for those who are all like "pfft, JLAB buds suck!", realize that they have the same star rating (with twice as many actual reviews) as sennheiser CX300 for less than half the price

also, they have a no-nonsense warranty replacement: tell them the buds quit working, give them the serial number, and they'll send you another pair free of charge

anecdote: i fell asleep on the beach when the tide was coming in and they got soaked under a small wave and still work great
