I don't commute, but I do take my kid to school. I'm either talking to my retired mother because I need her to help me out later in the day or I'm calling my husband who hasn't left for work yet to see if he wants me to bring home breakfast or get something from the grocery store.

Lol the other morning as I was driving listening to the radio (WMMR Philly) the station had air time shoot ous. Call in leave a msg and they'll play it. One was a good luck msg and another was "To the cutie in the red jeep on Route 30... GET OFF THE PHONE YOU WHORE!!"

My fiance always talks to her mom on the way to work...around 6:30am. Old people get up early and that's the best time to talk to them.

But she's got that 190% BLUETOOTH...so both hands are on the wheel.

But seriously, I've noticed this same issue. There is one girl at my work who is on the phone as she enters the building everyday (8AM) and as she leaves (5PM). I don't know who anyone could talk to that much.

Women just talk a lot in general. I've convinced myself that they must speak at least 5x that of the average male in any given day or their hearts will stop.

I just don't know who you could be talking to that early in the morning. I'm not in the mood to talk to anybody at that hour. And if I was having to talk to someone work related, I'd do it from home and then drive into the office or they can wait until I'm in the office.

I start my commute at 6:30 and still see people yammering away on their cellphones. I too wonder just who they are talking to. If you call me at 6:30 someone better be dead.

I'm guessing it's just people with separation anxiety. Like they leave their spouse on their commute but can't bear the burden of going 20-30 minutes without talking to someone.

I know people that feel the need to be talking to someone every second of their commute. I hate getting calls from those people because you know you'll be stuck on the phone with them talking about nothing for a good hour. You're just their to keep them company. Bonus aggravation points if they stop at a drive-thru during the call.

i run into this often, except they're not on the phone. i sometimes wish that they were on the cell phone so they'd have an excuse to be driving as slow as they are.

This exact thing happened to me yesterday. Entering a crowded beltline at 40 MPH behind some lady on a cell phone. Nothing I could do but merge and watch as the cars behind me approached with a 20+MPH speed differential.

As soon as all the cars blew by us she merges into the left lane; still driving at least 5MPH under the speed limit. I pass her in the right lane and watch in my rear view as frustrated motorists fly up behind her, hit the brakes, and then change lanes to pass on the right.

Cars need a standardized wireless upvote/downvote system so that the drivers around you can express their displeasure at your shitty driving.

How much do cell phone jammers cost? I think it would be hilarious to keep one of those up and running in your vehicle. Nobody around you could ever stay on the phone.

I do this all the damn time and often add a series of hand signals intended to express my displeasure.

An anonymous upvote/downvote system would engage the more timid drivers around me to participate. The cumulative effect of all those downvotes would force most people to confront their shitty driving as it's far more difficult to ignore the pleas of a crowd than the honks of "some asshole."

(I, too, can think of a hundred reasons this won't work...Just humor the idea. )
