I have an option to move from Charlotte to Greenville. Want to get feedback on the city. I lived there as a kid but know it's changed a lot. My main concerns are that there is nothing to do for a single, liberal woman as myself. Thoughts??? 10/9/2012 4:19:46 PM |

you wanna talk about cunts? lets talk about cunts. Greenville is full of em. The only worthwhile cities in SC are Charleston and Hilton Head. I've been to Greenville/Spartanburg plenty of times, I work for DoD and Fluor & LM are big there, so I get stuck visiting a lot, and it SUCKS. It's like Kannapolis except even hickier. 10/9/2012 5:05:11 PM |

um...not sure what Greenville, SC you've been in or when you were there but I grew up in Harrisburg (right next to Kannapolis) and absolutely hated that area but I really like Greenville, SC (I work at Fluor) and I see ZERO similarities between the two places. That's like saying that Asheville is like Fayetteville or something.
I dislike SC as a whole but like both Charleston and Greenville a lot. We have friends that visit from all over and always like it and come back to visit. I'll save anything else for the other thread that has now been bumped.

I imagine if you are moving to an area that is very conservative you might have a harder time meeting people with similar personalities or outlooks. 10/10/2012 9:59:01 AM |

I'd recommend not being a liberal. That should clear things right up. 10/10/2012 10:02:53 AM |

New Jersey and Florida beg to differ.
however, SC ain't far behind. 10/11/2012 1:28:36 PM |

I would think Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas are down there as well.
South Carolina at least has Charleston and beaches. With the exception of Greenville, the rest sucks pretty bad. But Charleston is one of the best cities in the country and the beaches aren't too bad. 10/11/2012 1:37:54 PM |

I can barely stand living in SC, as I said, Charleston and Hilton Head are the only options, and I can't afford Hilton Head (or the 90 minute commute). As far as

is concerned, my last visit was this summer and I stayed at the downtown Hilton near Fluor Tower. the best thing I could find was a 24 hour Steak n Shake behind the mall. Seriously. if you think that's worth a visit, you need to get out more. unless Greenville has a seedy underground that I haven't been able to find.
PS: Columbia, SC is the armpit of the South10/11/2012 6:01:14 PM |

Greenville is a nice town and if you can't live in Charleston or any other coastal town in SC, its your best option.
^He's being extremely drastic. In NC, I'd rather live in Raleigh/Chapel Hill/Durham/Wilmington/Asheville/Charlotte...but Greenville is better than the rest of the towns. It's much nicer than the High Point/Winston Salem/Greensboro area and NC's version of Greenville. 10/11/2012 7:47:56 PM |

^ agreed. I enjoy Raleigh, Durham, Wilmington, Asheville more (not sure about Charlotte but I'm probably just worn out on it since I grew up there and am there all the time for family) but Greenville is very enjoyable.
^^Ah ok that explains it. As soon as I saw Steak n Shake I knew something was wrong; I didn't even remember we had one of those. You haven't actually been anywhere in Greenville then. The Hilton near Fluor is nowhere near downtown Greenville regardless of whether "Downtown" is in the name (although I've never seen anyone refer to that as the "downtown hilton"). Basically, that's like you staying at a hotel next to crabtree valley mall and only going to stuff in that little area and then saying that Raleigh sucks without ever going downtown. No one goes over there to do anything unless you're going to the mall (and I've been to that mall probably 3 times in 5.5 years here).
If you want to see the part of Greenville that makes it great you need to go downtown (about 6 miles from the area you were). Columbia is terrible, spartanburg is terrible, and hilton head is ok but I really like Greenville. Charleston is obviously the best city in SC but Greenville is a fairly close 2nd and leagues ahead of all the rest imo.
pretty sure you didn't see this in the suburban mall area.

No, I didn't, that actually looks worth going to. I drove all around one day after work looking for something to do, and all I could find was strip malls and stuff along freeways, guess I must have went in the wrong direction. Which direction is all of that in? Northwest? I always come into Greenville either from Charlotte or Charleston, so I'm always near 85 or 385 and I've never seen anything remotely close to that. That's why I compared it to Kannapolis, it reminds me of just another town along an interstate. I'll check it out next time I have to go to Fluor. 10/11/2012 8:06:49 PM |

Ill put this in this post instead of editing my old one: Next time you come to Greenville, you should definitely go out downtown. LOTS of local restaurants and bars and it's busy almost 7 days a week. For restaurants I recommend Nose Dive, Soby's, or the Lazy Goat to start. A few of my favorite bars are Trappe Door, Barleys, and Velo Fellow.
It's almost directly west from the mall. From the Fluor area you can take 385 toward downtown and it basically ends on East North St which intersects Main (where the best stuff is off of). You can also take Laurens to Washington which crosses main. 10/11/2012 8:12:22 PM |

Yup, I had been going the wrong way, I was looking for everything on the south side, sounds like I need to go north. Thanks. 10/11/2012 8:14:29 PM |

yep np. Also both my wife and I work for Fluor (I'm on the corporate side and she's on the government side) so it's possible we have crossed paths without knowing it but who knows since it is so big. 10/11/2012 8:19:40 PM |
