How does it make you feel knowing that my vote is going to cancel yours out on election day?

I'm wondering, if a candidate came along that was advocating all-out war on an unsuspecting country (let's just say... denmark), with a platform that consisted of a 70% tax rate, the destruction of the Dept. of Health and Human Services, eliminating emission regulations from all cars, and instituting a national "kick pregnant women in the stomach day"...

but was pro-gay marriage and would make it happen by stacking the supreme court in favor of it...

would Supplanter vote for him?

I've got an extremely gay, extremely conservative friend. He's a multi-multi-millionaire and is pretty much a Southern Redneck with the exception that he loves cock.

I haven't talked to him in-depth since the debates, but before the debates he was considering voting democrat for the first time ever because of Obama's social stance (specifically on gay marriage of course).

^^ So definitely not to that extreme, but it still makes a difference.

meh, voting based on gay marriage issues in a federal election is sort of stupid. Sure federal support, policies, etc. help, but in the end, it's a state issue (thinking big picture here; not DADT type of stuff), not a federal issue (unless something makes it to the supreme court). I'd be more worried about economics on the state and federal levels during this election. If anything, use your stance on gay marriage for your local/state elections, and that would likely be best served when the economy isn't in the shitter. Though, none of this may matter anyways, 70%+ of gays typically vote for (D)s anyways and will vote thusly no matter the state of the economy or gay rights issues.

it's not a state issue because states recognize some marriages from other states but not others, and the federal government recognizes some marriages administered by states but not others.

it's a federal issue and its a civil rights issue.

I'm not saying that there isn't a federal component to it; however, if the main idea behind gay marriage debates is in fact legalizing gay marriage, then that's mostly a state issue, not a federal issue, as evidenced by the state level battles.

If you're gay and wanting to get married; where do you get your marriage license? What level of government is most controlling of marriage licenses? Unless I've missed something, it's most likely that a change in a state law/constitution will allow granting of marriage licenses; not the federal government, seeing as how the feds aren't in the business of marriage licenses, thus voting for gay rights on state levels would make more sense than on federal levels (in addition to it likely being easier to have state level change than federal change, a court ruling, and the federal government forcing states to issue licenses).

I agree that it's a civil rights issue and would agree that no government can deny a marriage license between two consenting adults. The idea of gay marriage and civil rights is a federal issue; however, the action, the battles, etc. are happening on the state level now (more so than on a federal level).

Republicans are getting a bit silly about why people should and should not vote. Reproductive rights/women's health/voter rights/gay rights...these have all been dismissed as non-issues on which the federal government presumably has no impact.

Vote for Mitt Romney: you may disagree with him but he can't do anything anyway!

Right, but it's important factor at the federal elections because
a) important for the federal government to recognize ALL marriages
b) its easier for national interest groups to influence state ballot measures and put in anti-gay amendments or laws than at the federal level (as happened in NC). So it's important protections are sought at the federal level
c) many state-run programs that make decisions based on marital status are funded by the federal government, the federal government could force states to recognize all marriages
d) immigration

very very much a federal issue, saying its a state issue is just a talking point to avoid it

I think we're talking about two different things. I agree with you on ^; however, I'm saying if 2 gay people want to get married, the most likely place for that change will first be at the state level. I'm not talking about ancillary issues around gay marriage; just government issuing licenses. I think it is much more difficult to have that change on a federal level than on a state level (anecdotal evidence: some states allow/recognize it; feds are still mum). If Obama gets reelected that doesn't mean gay marriage is coming. It probably means little to no change. However, on the state level, I think voters can have a bigger impact and force/influence that change.

Despite what the final numbers were on NC's A1 last year, I think that battle shifted a lot of minds. NC just has too many dumbfucks in hillbilly town.

And my original point, which I probably didn't explain well, as that if you're a social liberal (gay marriage issue) and financial conservative, I think it would make more sense to vote conservative federally and liberally locally to possibly impact the changes you'd want to see more quickly (for this election/scenario/etc.).

and since its much easier for these national interest groups to change state law, its important to elect people at the federal level that can take that option off the table and force states into the 21st century

^^^^I don't know. It's just hilarious.

Women's health is a non-issue. Don't worry about it! Planned Parenthood ain't going anywhere. But make sure you stock up on guns before the election--Barack Obama's gonna outlaw all firearms during his second term!

It's true that its likely very little will change if Obama is elected, but that is because he's not the only player. The answer is not to dismiss the issue, the answer is to elect more progressives at the federal level.

^^^well that works two ways

^^guess not then.

^it's not dismissing the issue. it's weighing the importance, timing, likelyhood of change, location of change, etc. My point, for this election cycle, is if you want financially "conservative" policies and gay marriage in this election, and the economy is a big factor for you, then what way would be the best to vote (this all stems from the conservative millionaire story).

Quote :
"I've got an extremely gay, extremely conservative friend. He's a multi-multi-millionaire and is pretty much a Southern Redneck with the exception that he loves cock.

For people in this situation, who are presumably financially conservative, yet pro-gay marriage, I don't think abandoning your economic views is worth the vote for a pro-gay marriage guy who will likely have little impact on gay marriage (again speaking for this election alone). The economy is the biggest, most important, and most damning issue. Even among gay voters, the economy is the #1 issue by far. Is it more important to maybe limit national interest group impacts on state level decisions over the next 4 years; or right the sinking economic ship (according to the views of your guy).

That's obviously his dilemma. I'm looking forward to hearing his thoughts pre-election and seeing where his vote goes.

I do know that he wants to get married and have kids, which is why this is tugging at his heartstrings at this moment.

It's Questionable Content; once I heard about it a couple years ago (on a different forum, before I even joined TWW), I went on an archive binge, and I still post updates from it when I think they're interesting to TWW.

I figure this thread has my name on it and doesn't seem to be going away, so I guess I should post here.

To AxlBonBach wondering about my voting habits, I've already said my piece in the "Who are you voting for and why?" thread over a month ago:

Quote :
"I'm voting for President Obama, but I can completely understand why people would vote for Gary Johnson, and there's a lot I like about him too. Despite rhetoric the Republican Party in practice isn't a party of small government or less spending or personal freedom, which makes their extremely socially conservative party platform stand out all the more.

President Obama signed an executive order which allows for hospital visitation for gay couples, signed into law the repeal of don't ask don't tell, and supports marriage equality. His stances align more closely with mine than the Republican platform on public education, college accessibility, clean energy, Latino issues, women's rights, equality issues, and voting rights.

Who the President appoints for the Supreme Court over the next term could make a huge difference on issues like marriage equality and whether or not Citizens United stands."

To wdprice3's point about marriage equality only being important if "something makes it to the supreme court" I'd point out that, even though it's not widely reported on, it already has. Cases challenging DOMA and that could open up marriage equality are finally at their doorstep, and I believe they'll be announcing if they are taking cases like the Prop 8 case after the election. I believe there are 4 justices in their 70s so this election could have a huge effect on if and when anything changes on this issue. I've heard some people express concern about the future of Roe v Wade too.
