This is impossible to predict. It all depends on what happens in the next 4 years. Assuming that there will even be a Republican in 4 years is taking some mighty big liberties. 10/17/2012 1:26:56 AM |

Who will get nominated is hard to say, but I think these folks are running at least in the primaries:
Dems: Clinton, O'Malley, Cuomo GOP: Christie, Pawlenty, McDonnell Libs: Johnson
I don't think Romney can viably run a third time. I like Castro, but he's going to need to hold a higher office than mayor before running for President (assuming you're talking about the Castro who gave the big speech at the DNC, rather than his identical twin brother Rep. Castro).

This will be the last gasp the current establishment GOP party, so I'm thinking Jeb Bush or Chris Christie, with Rubio or some other minority/woman as the VP.
The Dems will be coming off a 4 year job growth figure of ~12 million and will be in a similar position to when Clinton left office. I'm expecting a "safe" pick of either Hillary or Biden running with someone like Castro or maybe even Warren. 10/17/2012 3:21:07 PM |

Count on Bachmann, Gingrich and Santorum all being in the GOP primary field, McDonnel, Christie and Rand Paul are all strong probables. Tim Pawlenty . . . who knows.
Huntsman may run again, but being a former Obama appointee after 8 years of BHO combined with the fact that he isn't a candidate that really energizes voters . . . I suspect he won't run or he'll be out early on.
The question is really going to revolve around the question of whether or not there is a charismatic, likeable, palatable candidate emerges. The potential Democratic field is presently stronger and deeper in most of those categories.
The real question will be what happens to the GOP in the wake of a Romney defeat? Do we see a 3d party making serious runs at house and the occasional senate seat in the mountain west?] 10/17/2012 3:59:02 PM |

I keep hearing people conjecturing that if Romney goes down the GOP will just implode under its own ultra-conservatism. Why do people think this is the case? The evangelical base isn't going anywhere in the short-term and someone will want to get their votes. 10/18/2012 8:52:50 AM |

^^He's too all over the map and hard to pin down. No one is going to see his failure as a failure of their own philosophy, they'll see it as a failure of others in the party, and think more people need to think more like themselves. 10/18/2012 10:22:35 AM |

^^ Exactly. Half of the people in the Republican Party think Romney isn't conservative enough and they want somebody like Santorum. Others think that Romney is pandering too much to the evangelicals and the party is hardline right. Plus, you've already got the Tea Party as a very vocal and uncompromising segment of the party. The proof is in how they run even more conservative candidates in Republican primaries to purify their ideology. One more loss to Obama might be enough to finally shatter this fragile alliance. 10/18/2012 12:16:42 PM |

Christie/rubio
and clinton/clinton
every democrat knows that having clinton back in the white house can only be a good thing, and with Hillary laying relatively low lately and doing well in the 08 primaries, I think that she has a good shot.
It will def be christie's race to loose though. 11/2/2012 4:31:16 PM |

Keep an eye on Joe Kennedy up in Massachusetts. He's creating the kind of excitement Obama was in 2004. Not sure if he will be a big enough name by 2016 but he could turn some heads. 11/5/2012 2:47:33 AM |
