Anyone know how people with lower than 35% tint pass inspections? My friend just moved here and her car has about 20% tint since it was legal back in her state. She's trying to avoid spending money to retint. I see tons of cars driving around town with dark tint. How do they pass inspection?

I don't think she can pull off the "roll down windows" approach.
Maybe there are inspection stations that don't give a flip? Feel free to PM me. Really appreciate it.

Cant you just roll your windows down and pull your window fuse? There is no law on having windows on a vehicle, and if they cant roll them up they cant inspect them.

have they caught on to the window trick? wouldn't it seem kind of obvious when they can't roll up the window? would they check the fuse?

Perhaps not at Jiffy Lube. I think it's worth a try, especially considering they don't charge if you don't pass (pretty sure that's accurate)

really? is that just Jiffy Lube not charging first if you don't pass or all inspection stations?

from what I recall with my own experience in the past, if I failed, other places still charged me first and then if I go back to reinspect after fixing, I pay like $5 or $10 more to complete it.

even if they can find someone who will pass it, NC SHP will eventually pull them over, check it on the side of the road, and write a ticket.

What is NC SHP ? State highway patrol? What about local driving. Will cops still pull you over b/c they "suspect" your tint is too dark?

I see people driving around with dark tint all the time.

basically my thought is this...

giving the cops the least amount of reasons to pull you over is probably the best ideal

yes, highway patrol. highway patrol is the only agency that i know for a fact will pull you over and check your tint. there's no reason other agencies can't do so if they have the meters. you're still likely to run into SHP during "local driving".

some of them know a shady shop that will pass them. the shop will eventually get caught. some folks peel it, go pass inspection, and then re-tint every year.

on a truck or SUV, the NC tint limit does not apply to the back glass and any side/door glass except the driver and front passenger side. on a 4 door SUV or truck, you can spray paint the back glass and rear door glass black if you so desire. perhaps you see these vehicles and think they're illegal when they're not.

also, the roll-down-windows approach will not work on a car because the back glass must pass 32% or more.

if she has an SUV, she'd only have to re-tint the front doors.

tint is not something to cheap out on. cheap tint jobs bubble in a couple years. bubbled tint won't pass inspection, even if it's 35%. then you're right back where you were. get it peeled and leave it without tint or get it done right.

i like Pete at TVP on Westgate Rd.

is the $10 tint from wal-mart really that bad if installed correctly? Mine's been on the 240 for years with no problems (other than mess-ups from original install). I don't know where those people get their purple, bubbly tint

I recently bought a $20 pre-cut tint package (7x pieces) from Ebay for the minivan and couldn't be happier after doing the front two windows. The rest are pretty dark already, so I may not bother tinting them.

Ive had illegal tint on the front windows of my suv for 10 years and never been pulled over.

I have always had a shop that would inspect for me. I usually just roll windows down and they dont say anything. Initially he said "if anybody asks you got your windows done after inspection." And no I dont want to tell you which shop i go to.

I've had tint on my car for 4 years now and every year, they forget to charge me for the tint inspection fee.

Riding dirty or not...I wouldn't want to drive a vehicle that can be used as a legitimate excuse for the cops to pull me over whenever they want.

Cheap tint + ammonia based cleaners (Windex) will turn purple.
The bubbles are usually poor installation.
If I'm doing it myself I'd drop the extra $15 for better tint film. If it's worth devoting my time and energy to it I want it to look as good as possible and last as long as possible. My time is worth more than $15 worth of tint. Just my $.02.
