following the letter of the law to an obviously ridiculous extent can get you into trouble

here's a boring story related to that

During his travels through the Middle East, Lawrence of Arabia had these two squires named Faraj and Daud. And they were huge pranksters. For several days they were on a "Snake!" kick, where they were constantly yelling "Snake!" and scaring the beejeezus out of everyone

so Lawrence is like, If you boys yell "Snake" one more time I'm gonna flog the shit out of you

so the same day, Lawrence is sitting writing in his journal, and he notices Faraj and Daud sitting a few yards away. And they're nudging each other and grinning. So Lawrence looks around them and sees this huge desert cobra slithering towards him. He manages to kill it in time, and then, despite the fact that they have obeyed his orders to the letter, he flogs the shit out of Faraj and Daud.

settledown's recent practice of labelling every thread he makes with "NSFW," and then posting porn in it that is totally irrelevant to the subject matter, is kind of the same deal. not really, though.
