On a January day in 5th grade, we waited for the kids to load before going home from school.
As we waited, we had a Thai kid whose grandmother had joined his family for the holidays show us his lunch.
He challenged me to try his leftover lunch with a large grin on his face.
Not knowing what to expect, I smelled a sharp odor that nearly brought tears to my eyes. Not wanting to back down, I tried it.
The taste of his lunch was so spicy I had tears grow in my eyes as I began to claw for his kool-aid and drank all of it. It wasn't enough...
Coughing and gurgling the kool-aid in his lunch thermos, I declined to try again. The Thai kid could not stop laughing.
I attracted the attention of others around me who also accepted the challenge, a short white kid with glasses was the next to try.
He stared at a piece of chicken and looked at my reddened face before deciding to take the largest bite and chewing quickly to win the challenge.
"It's not bad," he shouted to everyone around him.
Then something different began to change in his eyes... it was the look of complete submission and desperation.
He clawed at the thermos in my hands only to find it empty.
Breathing rapidly he looked for something cold... he began to desperately lick the windows.
The bus driver peered at the mirror and began to yell...
"Now what is going on back there?" the large, black lady said.
Briskly, she walked quickly to the rear of the bus, viewing with measurable concern at the short white kid with glasses desperately licking the bus windows.
We all sat quietly, snickering at the amount of trouble the kid with glasses was going to get into for his desperate plea to cool his burning tongue.
"Oh... You on the wrawng bus, aren'tcha," the black lady said compassionately.
She took him by the hand...
"Come with me, child," she said.
The kid with the glasses was escorted off the bus. We looked out the saliva stained windows and witnessed the black lady escort him on the short bus where two other short kids with glasses were licking windows.
Yeah, we didn't see that kid again for a week...  11/24/2012 5:55:50 PM
