ikea is pretty terrible, but if you need furniture, don't have time to go around to all the local thrift shops and yard sales, only have a car and don't want to feel bad about having to possibly give it away when you move... ikea is really about your only choice. it still costs about twice as much as it should, though. 11/26/2012 9:48:55 AM

I disagree. My wife and I visit thrift shops, consignment shops, vintage stores, antique malls, yard sales and do a lot of furniture shopping. While I put a lot of value on solid wood pieces and quality craftsmanship (vintage or new) Ikea still has a lot of things for the home that are a good buy and we stop in now and then on our way back home from a Raleigh visit. They make up a very small % of our home furnishings but the items we do have we are very happy with - and I am EXTREMELY picky with home stuff.
I really do have no real interest in buying a sofa, or main chair, or a piece of furniture that gets heavy use (repeated loading), but they have a lot of smaller items that are good for the price. Picture frames, vases, floor tiles, drapery, comforters, lighting, dressers, floating shelves, etc. They also provide a lot of opportunity for customization and DIY (aka ikea hacks). We picked up a solid wood, unfinished dresser for cheap and because it was unassembled it was easy to stain, paint, and then put together. Much easier in that case than visiting a dozen second-hand options to find something we liked, sanding, prepping, etc.
The other dresser that we got from them, while it may be particleboard, is 100x better than any crappy particle board I have ever dealt with from Walmart or Target or something. Assembled quickly, feels sturdy, and it looks and feels much nicer (self-closing, smooth-close drawers).
It's not a store I'd be happy buying everything from, but it has its niche uses that I like it for.

Ikea isn't your grandmas 800 lb couch that was passed down from her dad who cut down a tree to make it. Its the definition of modern... functional, simple, universal. Stay in the 1800s if you want.

We have a large 4 glass door free standing cabinet with glass shelves that we bought from IKEA last year to hold and display our dishes and large assortment of fancy drinkware. It came in 2 heavy and long boxes that took me and a buddy to carry up the steps. But once it was assembled it was sturdy as a rock. I was reluctant at first but it's been fantastic. 11/26/2012 11:16:59 AM

My couch was from IKEA, and was much cheaper than similar styles that I really wanted but couldn't afford ($600 vs $5,000-$10,000). It's pretty sturdy, and I can't imagine it falling apart anytime soon. 11/26/2012 11:27:15 AM

I wasn't insinuating that their parts are shit quality, just that theres a different overall aesthetic that isn't trying to hide the fact that its in a manufactured style.

every time i buy something from there I get pissed off and swear the place off. but I always come back because it's so much cheaper than any equivalent.
Their drapery systems and cabinets are pretty good for the price, but it's easy to get home and a part missing, or end up with one of 10 parts the wrong color because you just stuck your hand in and grabbed the correct number because 10 people were crowded around you doing the same thing.
Another thing is that they randomly discontinue or never stock key pieces they advertise like crazy-- I bought some drapery system earlier this year and want to expand it, and they've discontinued the corner piece I need. and I have some leftover pieces I wanted to do that with, and I've lost the receipt, of course. But i checked out one of their basic cheapie systems and it turned out to be half the price of the next-best other option for a 140" span, which i was on my way to purchase at Home Despot.
Earlier this year, we built a storage sink cabinet thing and wanted the matching tap, which was out of stock for 2+ months at the store, despite being attached to every fucking sink in the display area. Finally got it from the site, but that was very frustrating since the stock update online info was misleading.
One thing I will never buy there is bedding. It is absolute shit quality. 11/26/2012 11:39:21 AM

besides its only throw away furniture if you throw it away or intend on 'upgrading', then how is it different than craigslist or anything else? You don't like it because its modern, and thats okay but don't make up other reasons.

I used to go to the Ikea in Red Hook so I could get breakfast for $0.99.
A cup of coffee is like $0.29 and it comes with free refills Plus there's nice things to sit in. I used to go read a book there. 11/26/2012 12:38:08 PM

the couches and stuff seem hit or miss. I've had some friends use them and it felt like decent quality for the price, others have definitely seemed a little cheap. Couches are still one of the areas where I can justify spending the extra money for the quality if you can afford it of course. The frame, springs, and fabric all get abused so much just with normal use that cutting corners can be a gamble (works sometimes and other times it's worn out in a few years).
There are a lot of local suppliers who hand-make stuff in NC, though you are going to be looking at $1000 low end with base fabric options (which are still nice pieces). It's still better pricing than some of the bigger names with equal quality (not always as many options of course with local suppliers though).
And I definitely agree with functional and simple (something Ikea does well) but you can still get those with traditional construction sofas as well. It's obviously just much more expensive.

With two cats, a dog, and soon-to-be kid that puke, scratch, and in general destroy furniture, I'd rather they destroy some cheap crap from IKEA than something I spent actual money on. The other solution would be to get rid of the cats, dog, and kid but I'm more attached to them than my furniture

That happened to us last time we were there We bought two curtain rods because they were a shitload cheaper than anything else and I didn't need nice ones for what we were doing, come home and neither of them work correctly. And since I'm not wasting my time driving down to Charlotte to return $2 in curtain rods we had to spend an afternoon ghettorigging the stupid things to work.
And yet I still stop by there every time I visit family near Charlotte
