Last time I was up in Manhattan for Christmas, we stayed in a hotel within walking distance of St. Pat's and Rockefeller. Can't remember the name but it was near the Waldorf Astoria. We just booked a super discounted 4-star hotel on Priceline or whatever and it worked out really well. I recommend that area rather than in Times Square because Rockefeller and 5th Avenue get really decked out for Christmas. It was also nice being able to walk to St. Pat's for midnight mass rather than deal with the subway that time of night if that's your sort of thing.

Check out what's on Broadway and see about getting some tickets while you're there. We saw Avenue Q Christmas Day which was awesome. Other than Christmas Day most of the tourist stuff should be open so just do what you would normally want to do in NYC.

I'm going to second Sweden's endorsement of Guy Fieri's restaurant
but only because it has triggered some of the funniest restaurant reviews I've read recently

i'd stay off of 5th and 6th avenues

i'd head to central park for a bit

i'd head to the natural history museum, especially for lectures
http://www.amnh.org/calendar/(month)/12/(year)/2012/(viewbymonth)/true

i'd go to some shows

i'd see the tree from a distance

i'd def do some music on bleecker street (south of washington square park around thompson st)

comedy at eastville (2nd st and 4th ave) with pregaming at the whiskey town bar on 3rd st ($10 for a shot and beer)
http://eastvillecomedy.com/schedule.htm#month
http://www.comedycellar.com/
http://whiskeytownbar.com/

comedy at comedy cellar off of bleecker (there is also a free comedy club on bleecker around the village lantern that has gotten to be pretty awesome)

I think the Manhattan Chinatown is awesome! And way easier to get to if he's staying in midtown. Just hop off the subway and try a restaurant, most of them are pretty cheap and you can get some awesome food.

^ Try Joe's Shanghai (Pell and Bowery) for something different (Soup Dumplings), though there will be a wait and it's much more expensive than the other Chinese places, very good quality though. There are a ton of other places that do soup dumplings too if you don't want to spend as much. Shanghai Cafe is one that's decent and cheap (Mott and Canal)

Late night you gotta go to Wo Hop on Mott and Mosco and get some type of noodle dish, I'd say chow fun...they'll serve you a TsingTao at all hours too and you can get the best T-Shirt you'll own for $6

Outside of that the above tip is right, you can walk into any place and score a great, cheap meal, but try and read some tips first. Just like diners, these places all serve the same 134 dishes and they're hardly all good at every dish. Figure out which dish the one you're in makes best

A couple other non-Chinese Chinatown area suggestions:

35 - Awesome Thai food on Lispenard St, just sound of Canal
Jaya - Malaysian, gotta get the Sweet Basil Chicken over rice
Thai Son - Shit ain't Thai son it's Vietnamese. Order the pho

Guys, I think he's looking for more than just food. Food is food. You'll have some awesome experiences in NY but it's still just food. Get out and experience, local NY stuff. Chinatown is great just to walk through--don't even have to eat.

^^ agreed. Call "the box" and get a reservation. You will see some of the most awesome sex/strip/freak shit ever. Saw a broad take an enema of 151 up the butt, light in on fire and spin around on a swivel

See what bands are playing the Brooklyn bowl, they get good music. And Brooklyn is fun in general

This is exactly what I would do:

1) Go to moma
2) go to that 3 story art/venue place i forget the name
3) go to whatever show unartignyc.com/recordings/ is recording
4) AVOID THE WARSAW AT ALL COSTS
5) drink until 4 am

also hang out in the ghetto in williamsburg. don't buy a pack of 3 dollar cigarettes no matter how drunk you are. walk across bridges. don't buy stupid touristy shit. find something going on related to your interests.

6) GO SEE ASSCAT. DO IT

Everything in new york revolves around eating and getting really drunk.

Just do those two things and the cultural stuff just happens.

I'd turn out all the hoes that's heterosexual
Smack conceited niggas right off the pedestal
I'd even look for my dad that I never knew
And show him how I look and my Beretta too
I'd do good shit, like take kids from the ghetto
Show them what they could have if they never settled
Take every white kid from high-class levels
Show them what Christmas' like, growin' up in the ghetto
Teach niggas how to spend, stack the rest
Give blunts to them niggas under massive stress
Give every bum on the street cash to invest and
Hope Harlem World blow'll be my last request

haha I used to work doing catering for Savor Catering / Brother Jimmy's
their portrayal of NC is humorous to me and their head bbq chef didn't know dick about real NC BBQ
I smiled at him when he talked shit about some NC BBQ joints and they don't even serve chopped BBQ
also their Brunswick stew sucks dick and the owners went to UNC

BUT they used to do a 2 hr all you can eat and drink wing/ribs and beer special for under $20
might still if you want to get wasted on the cheap

drinking is ungodly expensive in the city and drove me to eventually get a ticket for brown bagging in the park... this will set you back only about $25 but will require you to appear in court which, on the bright side, means you get to come back!

If this is a "couples affair" then the answer is super easy. Take a carriage ride trough Central Park. Head to tavern on the green as they pick up there regularly, get bundled in blankets, grab hot spiked cider, and have a Clydesdale tote you trough the park to see all the lights and displays. It's super clutch.

If you are by traveling with a significant other then pull a few grand out, head to Scores Gentlemens Club and get laid by a supermodel dressed as a raindeer

Both are a good time

The alumni event is at Brother Jimmys connected to Madison Square Garden. Yes I want to be a tourist to the umpteenth degree. I am going to be there at 5 and then the Texas Georgetown game is at 7 and then our game is after. I will be early morning Tuesday so I have until 4 to do anything. EAT, DRINK, see touristy crap and take photos. After the game I plan on staying wasted but where should we go?! The next morning Today show and more touristy stuff. I am there until 5pm. AND KEEP GOING!

if you insist on being in the Times Square area heed the following advice

go to the Bull Moose Saloon for several drinks to rub elbows with actors and members of the Electricians Union - fuck, the Bull Moose closed

go eat M&Ms at the M&M store or whatever the fuck you want to do
eat dinner at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. - who gives a shit?

BUT DEFINITELY FIND SOME ALTERED STATE
then stand in Times Square by the Max Neuhaus sound installation and listen
North end of the triangular pedestrian island located at Broadway between 45th and 46th Streets
http://www.diaart.org/sites/main/timessquare

alright, my back up bar is Jimmy's Corner at 140 W. 44th
its an old New York bar full of boxing memorabilia
