If the kids at the elementary school had been armed, much of this could have been avoided...

One side: Ban all guns.

Other side: Arm everyone.

Fight.

I think they're about to do a press conference

Interesting that they took out the principal and a few administrators

I think the most interesting part is that their school day starts at 9am

You, I really wish these kind of absolute tragedies would be regarded first as that. A tragedy. Not as another grenade in the issue of gun control.

Sometimes I really wonder .....

^^ jon stewart just did a piece on this recently on TDS.

If anything, politicians in general NEVER actually politicize this type of thing. Almost to a fault...

It sucks and seems a little insensitive, I agree.

But at the same time, these issues are never discussed until they are thrust in people's faces. Of course it's a tragedy, but it's not just some unpreventable tragedy where you say "shit happens."

Whether you are pro or anti gun control, things like this are a reminder of why we desperately need to figure out why these things keep happening in America disproportionate to other comparable nations.

That really isn't that many. And only a ~27% hit ratio?

With a kitchen knife he could have killed many more, and not have attracted as much attention.

Laws don't stop the crazy.

this is true...but from my perspective, stricter gun laws stop the less crazy and determined from EASILY committing atrocities like this

will a terrorist or gang thug still be able to get a gun illegally? of course...but much like not leaving your car doors unlocked prevents the opportunistic thief from stealing whatever valuables you left in the car while you ran inside the store for a few minutes, stricter gun control would prevent at least SOME violence (or so it seems to me)

and the argument about how concealed carry should be more available and less restricted (in terms of places a gun can be carried)? i know the CC proponents think that would suddenly make everyone a sharpshooting hero who will stop crime in progress or from happening altogether, but that's just ridiculous

^what science/statistics is your perspective based on?

Laws don't mean shit. You think someone who is willing to commit murder is afraid of a gun law, or any other law for that matter?

" As for demographics, the mass murderer is typically a white male, a loner, has a college degree or some college, from a relatively stable background and from an upper-middle to middle class family. They often aspire to more than they can handle, then form a hatred and blame others if they fail. Also, they are much more likely to suffer from a mental illness, specifically some type of psychosis."

Quote :
"According to a study of adolescent mass murderers (who killed over three people and were under 19 years of age), they are most often white males (79%) with a median age of 17, and they have a history of reclusive behavior as opposed to violent behavior. The majority of them were reported to be people who kept to themselves, often focusing more on books, dreams, videogames and brooding inside their inner worlds than real social connections with their fellow students, friends and families. This study is based on multiple source data gathered about 27 incidents of this kind, between 1955 and 1999."

did you not read what i wrote? i'm quite aware that someone who is willing to commit murder is not afraid of the law, and i said as much

but to pretend that all crimes are performed by people the same psychological state is unrealistic...there is a reason the law differentiates between first- and second-degree murder and yes, i truly believe that stricter gun control will, even if only a little, cut down on the number of second-degree incidents

if you disagree, that's fine

More and more technology making us less dependant on real life interaction is going to brood more of these types of people.

well, yeah, but i don't know any of the people, i don't live in the community or the state. i'm sad that people lost their lives, but this is precisely when gun control needs to be talked about, when there are mass killings of people by a crazy person easily able to get guns and lots of ammunition.
