Saw it last night. The score was great and the movie was well done overall but it was starting to drag near the end.
If I had to pick one thing I didn't like, it would be Russel Crowe. He's a fine actor, but his singing felt really flat to me. I'm not sure how to describe it beyond that. 12/29/2012 10:06:51 AM |

You only now heard it was a musical? What rock have you been living under? and did the previews where everything was sung not tip you off?

^4 Samantha Bark is Eponine in the concert and the movie.
Saw it last night with my wife (she's a big LesMis fan). Crowe was a distraction, he just doesn't have a powerful enough voice for Javier's parts. Other than that I enjoyed the movie, as did my wife.
It took me half the movie to remember I was watching Hugh (the bushy sideburns just made him scream Wolverine). He doesn't have a great voice but I think he did a fantastic job overall. 12/29/2012 1:52:22 PM |

I thought Crowe as Javert was a little underwhelming when he was singing in a multi-part song. I thought Enjolras or whatever the guy in the red was called did a great job.

That's how I am. I enjoy musicals some, but not enough in movie-form to pay to see it right now. If I'm going to see a musical I prefer it to be live but I'll check this out at some point once it is available somewhere else.12/30/2012 9:22:56 PM |

^^I'd say this one is worth it. The actors sang live on set and that's what made the final cut. I think a lot will be lost when this goes to the small screen.
Of course this is the second movie I've seen in theaters this year. I'm sure if I saw Transformers the Musical on screen I may say the same thing. 12/30/2012 10:23:31 PM |

As Les Miserables the musical is my favorite work of fiction of all time across all types of media, I knew I would only be underwhelmed.
And I was, but only a little bit. It was faithful adaptation (almost totally unabridged) with some arrangement choices that killed some momentum that was supposed to be there. And Crowe had no business in that role. But, was really pretty good, will be purchasing.

http://newsmakeup.com/les-miserables-reviewed-by-some-guy-whose-girlfriend-made-him-go-see-it/
Quote : | "So, my girlfriend dragged me to see “Les Miserables,” directed by Tom Hooper, who did “The King’s Speech” (zzzzzzzzzzzzz). I was kind of stoked to see it, though, because I’ve seen the posters and Wolverine and Gladiator are in it, plus that Anne Hathaway chick who showed her tits in a few movies.
Wolverine plays Jean Valjean, this big, strong French guy who has been in jail for, like, 20 years. He breaks his parole and turns his life around, but then Gladiator spends the whole movie chasing him. Anyway, there’s also a chick (Hathaway) who has to become a prostitute to make money to help her daughter (believe me: not as hot as it sounds). Valjean takes care of her daughter, who grows up to be a pretty hot blonde chick (Amanda Seyfried) who falls in love with this guy (Eddie Redmayne). And this girl with big tits (Samantha Barks) loves the guy too, but he loves the blonde chick. Basically, Wolverine and a bunch of people he meets get sucked into a big fight in France, where a group of hipster French guys make their last stand at a street barricade. Oh, and Borat is in it, too.
The movie opens with this epic shot of a huge frickin’ boat, being pulled by all these slave guys, and there’s Wolverine with his head all shaved, and he’s this huge guy and he’s like, “Welcome to the gun show,” and Gladiator is this police guy watching from the wall and he’s all looking like, “I’m Gladiator, bitch”. Pretty cool. I was like, “They’re gonna battle it out, dude!” Then they started singing. I was like, “What the fuck?” Turns out, it’s a musical! An “all sing” musical, like an opera, but with real words and shit. Jesus.
I tried to get up to leave, but my girlfriend made me stay, and I gotta say, I am so glad she did.
Let me tell you: this movie is transplendent as shit.
I totally got that this is a story of love and redemption; ideology and sacrifice; I mean, holy fuck, this movie made me cry, man. I was all, “I’m not gonna cry” and then Anne Hathaway was all, “I dreamed this dream that things would be awesome and they aren’t and now I’m a whore and it sucks ass,” and I lost it. I cried balls, man. And, get this, Tom Hooper had the actors sing live, so it really captures the raw emotion and shit. Oh, and anytime someone starts coughing, watch the fuck out and get the tissues, because you will cry your ass off, because it means they caught “consuption” or “comsumtion” or something like that. Whatever, a lot of people die. “Les Miserables” is sad and uplifting, and Wolverine and Gladiator sing without looking all gay, and Anne Hathaway is even hot until they cut off all of her hair, but I had put her in my spank bank already.
If you see one movie this holiday season, I say rent “Ted,” which is so fucking sick and funny. Then go see “Skyfall,” which kicks so much ass you don’t even know. Then go see “Les Miserables.” Get extra napkins, because you’re gonna cry a lot, but say it’s for the popcorn so you don’t look like a fag." |

Didn't realize it, but Samantha Barks, the woman who played Eponine, apparently played the same role in the London West End run of Les Miserables. Also comes with decent singing chops. So yeah... I guess that explains why she nailed the part. 1/9/2013 12:58:32 PM |

Saw the show live in the West End in London and was blown away. Saw the movie, and was generally satisfied with the representation, but nothing is like seeing it live with real voice talent.
The movie does it justice, though I'd echo that Russel Crowe has no place in the movie with so weak a voice. The Javert character needed a deeper, more powerful singing voice. All you brosephs that think it's just another gay musical are doing yourself a disservice. This one is more than a musical, and its not the typical Glee-like song and dance pageantry that you'd expect from one.
It's a real story that will resonate with everyone because of it's sweeping touches on human nature. 1/13/2013 11:18:04 AM |

^ that's what I thought. Then found the YouTube video of the London version and was immediately sucked in.
Crowe would have been a good choice if this didn't involve singing. Both the entire 10 and 25 year anniversary London performances are on YouTube. There are several people from both in the movie, which is cool. 1/13/2013 12:08:29 PM |

^The first 40 minutes can be tough to get through for those who don't already know the story. The director struggled to keep it all together, and having them sing it live on camera took away from some of the booming impact you would expect.

Those were just concerts with the cast, you know, not the actual show. The West End show is a lot more involved and a huge production with tons of sets and extras and a giant moving stage floor for 'traveling' scenes
