I lost my phone last year. I didn't have insurance on it, nor was I at the end of my contract. My only option was to buy a new phone. The cheap ones sucked, and I was on the hunt to replace my old phone. Same model, everything.

I held it off because of laziness for like a month. I did fine w/o a phone for a month. A little inconvenient some times, but wasn't hard at all.
