Can anyone explain what value this adds? Without this thing, there would be less wasteful spending and just as much information from the internet, which is much bigger than this library.

you know how many books -- especially very specific technical books -- are available on the internet? and of those how many are free? there's your answer. if you didn't use the library in college you seriously missed out on a great resource.

^^^^and you're wrong. if his friend is a good employee, getting the resume in front of the eyes of someone not in HR is a huge advantage.

I currently have a friend who is not way up the chain of command and she gave my resume to her boss at a highly prestigious company in Cary, and now I have gotten a job there that I otherwise would not have gotten through normal means.

Yeah, networking is hugely important. Knowing someone on the inside, even someone who is not particularly high ranking can give you a massive leg up on the competition when applying for the job.

Even if it's just somebody saying, "We worked together at _____ for 2 years. Super reliable guy, never had any issues with him when we had a project to work on." That's huge in getting you separated from the stack of resumes they go through.
