actually, it is technically more difficult than that. there's differences between sexual orientation, sexual identity, sex, gender, etc. lewisje has some graphic that explains it all.

My housemate from a few years ago is transgender and has a MS in sociology with a concentration in queer studies. Yes they really call it that. She explained it to me in this way: in queer culture there are many labels but there are no real boundaries. The only boundaries or labels that should exist are the ones put there by the individual. You can't say that someone is straight, gay, or bisexual just because they are either emotionally and/or sexually attracted to one gender or sex more than the other. There are an infinite number of colors in the rainbow, so to speak. The goal in queer culture is to be accepting and loving of all colors. Hence the use of the rainbow as a symbol.

So, to say that the difference between gay and straight is simply a matter of sexual versus emotional attraction is just simply false. Still, if you really want to get technical, homosexual usually implies that you prefer intimacy with the same sex or gender (and there is a difference). Extrapolating this further, to say that a homosexual man or woman is also interested in having relationships with the same sex or gender means that they have accepted their sexual orientation not just as that, but as a way of life as well. Most people say this means to be "out of the closet," but that is just another label.
