Under $500, whats the best option

Nikon D5100 vs. Canon T3i vs. Sony A65

This will primarily be used for landscapes, stars, and timelapse

There isn't a significant difference between them but I like the layout of the controls on canons more than nikons. Get whatever is cheaper.

I'm a Nikon guy, so I would recommend them personally. I think the dSLR crowd in the My Photos thread are probably 50/50 split between Nikon and Canon, so I would probably say sticking to either of those is a safe bet.

I hate answering these questions in that thread because with all the options on the market, trying to tell someone what camera to get is like trying to give them advice on buying a car. It's really all up to your own priorities and any advice someone gives you will be based on a completely different set of priorities.

Just go to http://www.dpreview.com/ and pick a camera based on the specifications you want.

what ^ said.

Also, the reason Nikon and Canon dominate the market is not because of their camera bodies, but because they make superior glass. If you go with Sony or any other brand, you need to do so with the idea that you'll never upgrade your glass beyond the basic kit lens stuff.

Yea go to Southeastern or Peace Camera and just hold them and try them out. Shit, go rent them from SE Camera for a weekend and see how you shoot with it. That will give you a great feel for the cameras themselves.

And ^ is exactly right, the glass is why most folks go Nikon/Canon. But once you make that choice it is going to be a bitch to cash out and switch sides afterwards.

And don't listen to that resale value shit. I personally have not sold any of my cameras and in a pinch I'd rather have those bodies/lens as ready to go backups. If I'm shooting an event and my main camera (D7000) starts acting up, I can just swap to my D200, D40 or whatever. By the time a camera is truly not worth it to me anymore, its not going to be work $50. Now the glass is a different story altogether.

^^^Yea found out about that from going to airshows and seeing all these guys toting gigantic glass. Most of them are never going to use that stuff enough to afford the massive sticker price for them, but one of them told me about renting them online. Sure enough lensrentals.com and other places will rent you tons of glass and even a body if you need a higher end one. Did those places a couple times until I moved back to the Triangle. Now I use SE Camera for renting locally as Peace does not do rentals anymore.
