IndyCar in 2011 had a driver die. They were bringing in sub 1.0 ratings all season long, bar the Indy 500. That race had the highest ratings, with them peaking after the incident.

Never doubt the interest people have in morbidity. 24/7 News networks exist to fuel this interest.

<^ they did show a replay, and they were holding out for information. It took several minutes for the EMS to have sufficient access to the scene. They wanted to interview the winner, 2nd place and some of the drivers involved in the crash, who weren't available immediately for interview. Maybe you don't care about it, but there are people who do, and I'd venture to guess there are more people who do care than who care about some comparatively insignificant basketball event.

Pretty much exactly how I felt. It really has absolutely nothing to do with caring or not caring about those people who were injured. Showing 20+ minutes of "well we don't know anything yet but we'll let you know when we do" and awkwardly rambling on to fill time isn't helping or paying respect to anyone that was injured; it's just dumb television. Move the NASCAR info to ESPN News, do a picture in picture setup from the broadcast end, or cut back if you have updates or something. Anything other than extending coverage when you have nothing to actually report.

But I guess all ESPN cares about is spiked ratings from people who hope to witness morbid news to say they saw it live or something.

^^I was out at that point and didn't know it was on another channel. I got the place to run through ESPN2, their alternates, and news a couple times and didn't see it (must not have been on at the times they flipped through) and they just stopped back on ESPN again when they couldn't find it. Eventually I saw on here via my phone that it was in fact on ESPN news and got them to switch but the half was mostly over.

The annoying thing with this kind of coverage though, is that a lot of people will feign interest in the well-being of the injured, when in reality you know they're quietly hoping to find out more people were injured or that some were killed. I just never find this type of TV coverage particularly useful or entertaining.
