So much talk has been about the possibility of a Pope from Africa or Latin America or a younger Pope open to change in the church. I wonder if there is anything to those notions? 3/13/2013 2:22:14 PM
|
lewisje All American 9196 Posts user info edit post |
There probably wasn't anything to the speculation about a younger or liberal Pope, but there was a fairly strong candidate from Ghana, one from Argentina (supposedly the #2 guy from the 2005 conclave), and one from Brazil, although most likely the new Pope is from Italy, where most of the strong candidates are from; my last-minute guess is Angelo Scola.

^ Yeah if anything the church is becoming more conservative with the proportion of latin and african followers.
Similar thing is happening for the Anglican church where all the US and British churches are kinda liberal but the African and world Anglican church is going hardline conservative. 3/13/2013 2:34:22 PM

There has been a lot of talk about the recently resigned Pope stacking the deck in terms of who gets to vote, and combining that with him still being around, does seem to indicate he's got a lot of influence over who God picks in this process.
Still, there has been tons of talk about having some who could represent the areas of growth like Africa and South of America, rather than representing areas with relative decline.

From Wikipedia on the new Pope talking about a marriage equality bill:
Quote : | "We are not talking about a mere bill, but rather a machination of the Father of Lies that seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God." He has also insisted that adoption by gays and lesbians is a form of discrimination against children. This position received a rebuke from Argentine president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who said the church's tone was reminiscent of "medieval times and the Inquisition"." |

^^^Latinos can be white; in fact they can be of any race, although most are either white, indigenous, or a mixture thereof (and the distinction is made more strongly in Latin America than in the US). The last non-Italian Pope before John Paul II reigned in the 1400s, during the Middle Ages (the time after that, beginning with the Renaissance, is known as the "Modern Era," and the time before that, ending with the sacking of Rome and going back to the start of civilization, is known as the "Ancient World"); also, the previous non-European Pope (Gregory III, from Syria) reigned in the 700s, shortly after the founding of Islam.
[Edited on March 13, 2013 at 3:34 PM. Reason : the time before civilization BTW is known as "Prehistory" 3/13/2013 3:34:08 PM

I was listening to NPR's coverage of the announcement. They were really scrambling to gather information and facts on Bergoglio because he was not one of the expected outcomes. There had been talk about electing a New World Pope, but this guy's name hadn't come up in any of their discussions over the last few days. 3/13/2013 4:06:02 PM

I wonder just how long this slab of marble has been used to list the dead Popes; it's probably from before the canonization of Pius X: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tafel_paepste.jpg
Note that Pius X is now considered a saint, and yet he lacks the "S." before his name; also John Paul II has been beatified, yet he lacks the "B." before his name in that list, so my guess is that the marble has been there since the 13th century or later, because the last Pope shown to have been canonized or beatified died in the 1100s. 3/13/2013 4:26:23 PM

This guy sounded pretty cool from the pitch the BBC anchors gave when his name was given, but reading wikipedia he sounds pretty much Benedict Part II. He seems like maybe a little more relaxed but then you get to the stance on homosexuality--not really a shocker though I guess. 3/13/2013 5:35:44 PM

Yeah meet the new boss, same as the anti-gay, anti-choice, anti-contraception old boss. And those statements aren't in the distance past, but in 2010, and they aren't in just a faith arena, but specifically stepping into the political arena to advocate for the restricting of rights of others. But by picking a guy in his late 70s, at least his reign won't be that long, so there will be a chance for change in the not too distant future.
