This is his way of being all "I totally support education", but can blame it on other people later when it doesn't work out. Much like Purdue did, btw.

^^Everyone that lives on the coast is annoyed by it. They just want to zone condos closer to the water. It's minor economic incentive for an otherwise enormously embarrassing decision.

also, I think he was almost forced into it. Wasn't it just last week that some report came out that found that NC teachers are like 48th in pay and NC is 46th in the amount of money we spend per pupil? Pretty damn embarrassing.

QFT and this thread should be Pat McRory is a smart politician. He has his escape boat if and when the general assembly approval ratings sink.

Most educators have to marry someone in a different more lucrative business to achieve any kind of middle class lifestyle.... which is sad.

I worked a cell phone kiosk for two years, part time, with great benefits and did not have a degree or any student loan debt, and made more than a full time teacher does with an expensive college degree.

^Yep. My wife has her Master's in education which gets her a pay bump with the state, takes on extra paying duties at school, and tutors 10-15 hours a week on the side and I still pulled in over $10k more than she did last year. I have no idea how single teachers make it work financially.

Not trying to add fuel to anyone's fire or anything, but folks also need to remember teachers don't work 1/4 of the year.

Great so they can offset the fact that many part time jobs pay better.

I worked 30 hours/wk year round. They were full time 75% of the year.

^That makes it sound like they're not doing much. In all fairness, kicking out all the oversight board personnel to install Pat's Duke Energy buddies from his last job instead, and giving pay bumps to Pat & Pope's people, have also been on the agenda.

^^still relevant and true. I've been saying it for years. Simply throwing more money at schools doesn't result in meaningful increases in student performance (sure, it may be true for some schools, but in general, it is not true). What's most important is the teacher and just a look through facebook of all my former high school classmates who became teachers... well let's just say it's scary to see some of those people now teaching.

at the very least you would need some multivariate regression to make that determination, there are just too many other factors to consider to look at 2 things alone

I guess I missed something, I figured approx. 2.5 months off during summer and 2-4 weeks on avg. through the year for holidays/breaks.

It would be nice if there was a system that rewarded those teachers whose effort and ability was reflected with results. The problem, as with most gov't jobs, is that it rewards the 20 yr burnout teacher who shows up just to collect a check and doesn't give a shit anymore the same as someone putting forth a hell of a lot more effort.

Effort doesn't really matter though...does it?

I'm not really contesting your point. You just seem to be placing a lot of emphasis on effort, and effort shouldn't necessarily be what we're looking for. Trying hard isn't enough for most jobs.

Ideally I'd love to focus purely on results, but I feel like that'd be tough to do given the variability of students and their individual efforts/potential. Perhaps I'm wrong, but it seems that teachers with low-level classes would be unfairly punished unless there was some independent way to judge results.

I'd love to apply some of my private sector thoughts, but I don't know that it'd be fair because so much of the students success comes from personal drive and parental supervisions, which seem to be severely lacking these days.

2 months in the summer of "not working"

and yes, those damn greedy good for nothing teachers get time around holidays off (for which they still use their allotted "annual leave")
