How do the Porsche purists here feel about owning this car? I've noticed prices have been falling on these and am considering getting rid of my STI for one.

If you're offering to give me one, I'll take it.

Not sure what you're asking here.

If you're cross shopping a 996 turbo with a freaking Cadillac ELR or would make a post on TWW about if you should get one, you probably shouldn't. That's how I feel about it. BAM!

I'm holding out until I can comfortably afford a 997 Turbo or GT3. I hate the 996 headlights, and the interior is pretty dated kinda homely. When I buy a 911, I want it to be the one I really want. I'll check other stuff off the list in the meantime.

well realistically i'll defer the c7 until they're coming off lease or someone wants to sell a 1yr old one for 45 or so. the elr is the outlier here because it's the only car in that category i'd consider. I commute 60 miles a day. I go to check a cayman s monday

no, my current car isn't going to let me string out this purchasing decision. cayman s would purely because I wanted a car that handled more neutrally than a 911 with a more modern interior than a 996. I haven't driven it yet and the 911 I drove was suspect as hell. elr is only if they offer the same ridiculous lease options like they do on the volt. im not prepared to eat that depreciation

Right the C5 driver isn't happy with the 996 interior.

I will either buy a new electric cadillac or a decade old German twin turbo super car.

That's kinda up there in "why the fuck would you waste your money" department. At the very least, there should be some better electric luxury alternatives. Doesn't Audi or Lexus have a nice hybrid in that range?

this.

...on another note, i was all about these cars last year, until i drove few, both n/a and tt. Ahmet gave me some input, but i just didnt enjoy amazingly capable, yet unbalanced weight distribution of the car. Front was too light...hard to explain. It could be that I just needed to get used to it, but anyhow, i genuinely did not enjoy driving it.

waiting for this turbo F80 M3 garbage to hit the streets so e9x m3 can drop in price.

^^^ Well, I'm assuming the ELR is a plug-in hybrid, so no, I don't think there's a comparable Lexus.

^^^^^ False dilemma--it's not like I'm happy with the C5 interior. That's specifically why I bought a supercharged S2k instead of a C5 10 years ago, actually. Of course, a C5 is in a different price category than a 996 Turbo.

I really don't like the headlights, and I'm not very hot on the interior. I want a 911 one of these days, but since I kinda want to own all the cool shit at least once, there's other stuff on the list that I can check off while I'm waiting for a Porsche that I really want to become more attainable.

The dynamics of the car are outstanding. The rear engined thing with no weight up front is not for everyone, it's really not. I don't want anything else as long as I can afford one but yes your Corvette and BMW's M cars do "handle better" by any objective measure, no question. If you haven't driven one in anger, I wouldn't suggest planning to buy one, you may not like it. If the front end is not loaded, it's not going to turn or really even help you decelerate that fast. You make the car rotate under braking and transition to power to continue the rotation. Again, not for everyone..

They're known as the reliable super car you can live with on a daily bases but today you can buy a C6 z06 for the same price that'll handily beat it, if that's your cup of tea. They are getting to be over 10 years old for some now and things can break on them. Clutch accumulator, power steering pump, etc. come to mind. Some of that stuff isn't cheap and if you need a clutch.. that's REALLY not cheap.

Does that help? Drive one first!

And if you think this is so ugly that you just can't own it;

well you're entitled to your wrong opinion.

No, it's definitely good looking. It's just that a 997 Turbo (or maybe a 993 Turbo) gives me weapons grade wood, and since I may only own one 911 in my life, I want it to be one of the ones I really like.

993 turbo is one of the sexiest cars I have ever seen.

It's just perfect in every aspect.

The only reason I'm building the galaxie instead is people won't assume I have as much money with the galaxie.

people won't assume you have money in a 20 year old porsche, they'll assume you're trying REAL hard with little to none

yeah..i feel the same. more than anything else, i think a lot of hype about 993 is more "infectious" being that it is the last air-cooled. i do like the dimensions of 993. new 911 is GIANT and awful dimensionally.

am i the only one that's bugged by the fact that Porsche sells generation after generation of high end sports cars with wheels that are directional on only ONE side of the car?

the passenger side always looks like a cheap Hot Wheels model. see above pictures for perfect examples.

otherwise i guess Porsches are kinda cool. or something.

I'm glad I stopped by here so you guys could set me straight.. I mean for a second there I thought these were actually attractive;

and this (now that I know better), what a.. dated interior. Thank goodness I don't have to drive something so.. old. I'd rather drive a 993.

Dimensionally yes I prefer the size of the 911-993 cars better. 996-997 to me are perfect for a car I drive on a regular basis and live with. 991 is too big for me unfortunately.

I don't like 993s, though I do like 964s quite a bit. I don't intend to own much other than a 996 GT3/GT2 or turbo.

I MEAN I KNOW THEY'RE SO OLD.. with terrible natural hand stitched hide used in continuous blocks for seats, dash board, door panels and alcantara headliner, that I'd rather be in a Chevy Cavalier but I guess I'll have to over look that.

I didn't that's fir sure.

I think the 993 is prettier but the improved performance of the 996 easily overcomes that.

The main reason I wouldn't get a 996 turbo is they are still depreciating and the 993 being the last if the air cooled will probably be worth a lot done day.

Duke you aint gonna keep it more than a couple years anyway. So who cares if the headlights look like a first-gen Boxster?

993 is my favorite btw, turbo or no. Best lines ever, interior has tons of old-world charm, and the very cool noise of an air-cooled 911. They have tons of raw character whilst having gotten rid of most everything I hated about the 964.

^BINGO!

993 is by far my favorite 911. And I'm really not feeling the squished and elongated look of the 991. Also the 991 Carrera S weighs 3300+ lbs...why so heavy?

same reason as any other car...it's crippled by all sorts of stupid governmental regulations to meet standards in different markets, and at least in the American market, we apparently want endlessly larger and larger cars (maybe because we are getting perpetually fatter, with no limit in sight).
